School Garden & compost advice needed

I've taken on the school garden this year at my the highschool I work at and would like to get composting soon, but I have several questions as to how to begin and details....

What we have:

Garden space

Access to "green" compostables (I am the foods teacher)

What we don't have:

-A composter of any type

-Lots of "brown" -I'm having the kids collect leaves over the weekend (though i'm not sure this is good for the mix.

-lots of $$

Now for the questions:

-Is it worth it to buy a pre-made composter or should we design our own?

-What is the best brown material to use?

-Can we really use shredded paper? and, is this "brown?"

-Assuming it gets turned/poked/etc 1x per week, ow long should I assume the compost will take to compost?

Your "composter" can be a three sided bin with air circulation--old pallets will work. The leaves are wonderful, especially if you can shred them a bit with a lawnmower, but if not, just add them to the pile in layers. Shredded paper is also good, just don't use the "slicks" from ads and magazines. Grass clippings are also good, but make sure to layer them rather than dumping them all at once.
As to how long your pile will take to be compost, that depends on heat/cold, amount of water, and ratio of compostable materials.
If there is a Master Gardener organization near you, contact them through your county agricultural extension agent and see if they have a "compost master". That person can advise you.
You are setting a good example for the students and saving your school district money (what you compost doesn't have to be hauled off for a fee). You should be proud!

Your haves and have nots are pretty much the same as mine, except for space. Most of my ingredients come from my kitchen with some shredded paper for browns. It is not the best ratio that many of this forums members have available, but in the nine years that I have been doing it this way, not one plant has ever indicated that they were dissatisfied.
My wife and I have always had plenty of food to last through the winter, and I like not putting the food scraps and junk mail in the garbage.

Oddly enough, I am presenting Phase IV of a 1970' condo redo tomorrow morning. The thing that you might find interesting is that they are converting a lot of area into lawn to save on maintenance costs. The cost of bark mulch and weeding has been killing them. The maintenance crew cheif loves it more than anybody. Mowing equipment is very fast and just about anyone can do it with good results. Environmentally incorrect? Well, here's the thing. There is high nitrogen in the ground water from septic systems that migrates from miles away toward the coastal ponds in the area. Lawn is a heavy consumer of nitrogen. One way to look at that is to assume that excessive fetilizer will be dumped onto the grass to try to make it greener than green resulting in the excess going into the groundwater and eventually causing algae blooms in the ponds. An alternative is to harness the grass's ability to consume nitrogen by using wells to remove the existing groundwater with its excessive nitrogen from the ground and feeding it to the grass. The water returns to the ground and continues on to the ponds with less nitrogen than it had before because the grass uses it up. I'm sure that it is a very different ecosystem where you are than what we have up here, but it is interesting in terms of regional differences. Think about all of the conditions the various parts of your site are in such as lawn, natural woodlands, perennial beds, younger shrub plantings, treed areas, understory areas, buildings, pavements, surface water or whatever else there is. Ask yourself and others what they really like about where the current landscape. That is how we started with this and another similar condo redo project that I was involved in. That will give you (the collective you) a better understanding of the quality of life issues that are part of what you as a community value. Those quality of life values have to balance out with other values such as cost, environmental consciousness, or others. It can be very easy to make a mistake in applying only your own balance of values and imposing them on your community with only the best of intensions. You stated that one of the problems that is driving up the cost of your maintenance is the mature planting. You also make a strong statement about the unused lawn area in terms of energy, water, emmissions, and money. The assumption is that what lies between these two extremes of conditions is either very little in terms of area, or does not drain your resources. Could converting toward those undescribed conditions keep maintenance costs down without introducing an experimental condition or changing the quality of life that the community enjoys? Look around your area to see what is working on other sites before you become a pioneer. Usually, good ideas catch on and become common place especially if they are economical. If you don't see fabulous swathes of wildflowers as you envision it is much more likely that they are not so easy or not so economical than thought rather than you being the first to consider it. One of the best things you can do for economy, environment, maintenance, and successful landscaping is to put in place what would grow naturally. You need to be more proactive than just getting a list of native plants. You need to know the local conditions very well and recreate what would grow there if we all disappeared and nature reclaimed it. You also have to be very aware of what might try to "reclaim" your plantings. The biggest problem with the wildflower "set it and forget it" seed mixes is Darwinism. Competition. Sometimes it is competition between what comes out of the seed bag, but more likely it is going to be some other crop that is better suited than what was in the mix. Local conditions are going to weaken some plants dominance while enhancing anothers. What will you wind up with? Hopefully, others in your area have found out and it is good, but you should do your best to find out before you commit.

Here, in Coastal S. Carolina, our MG chapter (Grand Strand Master Gardener Assn.) is presently building a "Carolina Fence Garden" (see http://www.scwf.org/articles/index.php?view=43 for more info), in conjunction with a middle school. The kids are doing ALL (well, almost all; we won't allow them to use "sharp tools", or to bust up the concrete left over from the school costruction, etc.) of the work, and did all of the design. The math classes did all of the calculations (area, amout of fencing to obtain, amount of concrete for the fence post holes, amount of mulch, etc.); the language arts classes "articulated" the project and are journaling the progress; the science classes studied the plants/soil/climate/ exposure; the visual arts classes did the artistic renderings, and so on. MGs did the "shopping" and material acquisition. We started near the end of last school year with the "heavy lifting" (grading, tilling, mulching, fence building), and let it "rest" over the summer. This week, we restarted the project, (hurricane season is now over, here) with planting of shrubs, trees and flowers. All of the money for this project came from grants, with a few donations, including an irrigation system by a parent, and the tilling/grading by a MG with equipment. MGs supervise and teach (we held an impromptu class on how to stake trees)and the kids do the work. Usually, there is 1 MG working with a group of 3 - 5 kids, in OJT: plant placement (why this plant should be here rather than there); digging holes for plants (proper dimensions and depth); mulching (amount and placement); backfilling, and watering-in. These kids have been GREAT! Most are highly motivated, and when questioned, express high interest in this project. Yesterday, I worked with Aaron and Vanessa, resetting some fence posts (blown over by the last 'cane to go through here) and they got right in the mud and got the job done! The school administration is SUPERB and 100% with us; they have provided refreshments and lunches for the volunteers, and the teachers are right there with their students. Many kids & teachers bring cameras to photo the progress and kids at work. We have another project in the planning stages - - a large butterfly garden in another area of the school grounds. A successful project depends on ALL of these things, but mostly INTEREST, TIME, and ENERGY of ALL parties: kids, MGs, school administration, even parents.

Send a letter home to parents asking them for donations of plants or bags of dirt. Many people have extra plants or can make divisions and would be willing to donate a few for the school garden. Especially if you explain the educational benefits. This may not help you now, but later you could introduce some botanical lessons by showing them how to propagate the plants to make more. Once you've gotten a few for the garden you can use them as stock plants. Ladybug's seed suggestion is a great idea. You could offer to make plaque with the names of all nurseries who donated plants or materials for the project.

It all depends on your current soil conditions and how big the garden is. A vegetable garden doesn't have to be tilled or plowed every year. If it has grass on it, the biggest job will be breaking that up. If the soil is poor - low in organic matter - you'll want to incorporate a lot of compost up front and more each year to maintain the levels and build a better soil. Sounds like you are ready to do that. I had my garden plot initially tilled by a guy with a tractor, not sure of the size (of the tractor) but it was finely broken up (tilled) rather than plowed. I would recommend a tiller rather than a plow for gardening. I don't know of any rock-removing implement. Your own two hands is pretty much it. If you pick a spot to toss them into a pile and do that whenever you see them, over time there will be fewer and fewer. I keep a small pot in the corner of each raised bed for rock pieces - mine are gravel about 1-2" across and there are not many at this point. Re planting, you don't HAVE to plant in rows. You probably do want to establish some paths to walk on and beds that you don't walk on. If you plant tomatoes, peppers or other plants that are not grown from seed, you can plant them in a grid rather than rows. You might want to start small with one bed rather than a huge area the first year. Expand it each year as you have time and materials.

Rexa, I know that the Master Gardeners in NJ also have Master Composters who would be happy to help (we just had one speak at our rose society meeting last Saturday). Call your county cooperative extension office (link below) and ask. If you are anywhere near Monmouth County, there is a compost display at Deep Cut Gardens in Middletown, NJ. Great effort!

Be brave and jump in.

Use wooden pallets. Pick out pallets with one side with lots of boards but with spaces between the boards. Use that side on the inside of the bin. You can tie the pallets together with rope. Make at least two bins, three is better. Put them near the garden, in a shady spot. You will probably end up with 4 foot pallets and that has worked for me.

Try using a layer of cardboard to line the bins. As mentioned before, try to get the leaves shredded. You live in an area where there are lots of trees. You might want to save some bags of leaves for the spring when there aren't other good sources of 'browns'.

You will have to buy a manure/compost fork when it is time to turn the pile. You can use a 3 foot metal rod or pipe as a 'thermometer' to tell if the pile is heating up. Leave the rod in the pile, then pull it out and feel with your hand to tell if it is warming up.

I keep my compost pile(s) covered with an old leaf bag to insulate the pile (help keep heat in).

thanks all for the responses!!! until i came upon this board, i had no idea that paper is "brown" ...yay!!!...
I'm really liking hte pallet idea, though have a couple of quesitons:
- do you suggest having pallet boxes in different stages of compost?
-to get compost out, do you just untie a side?
-How often should it be turned?

i've called nj master gardeners several times and they are mighty helpful--i think this was their last week, however- at least in Bergen county...i didn't know there was a compost master - i gotta get ahold of this person...

Hey! I'm a Master Composter, I could do it!

What's the airfare Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to New Joisey and back? Hotels for a couple of nights, maybe some sightseeing? Can't be all that much!!

Oh, wait a minute, I don't have a passport! Dang it!! :-(

Seriously though, does your school have a wood working shop? Find someplans online, get the shop teacher to build a three bin composter as a project for his/her class. While you're at it, ask for a small shed for storage and an attached little sunroom to act as a green house. Make it a project and get the schools parent support group to help out. It'll be fun!

I was going to suggest as Lloyd see if you can get help from woodworking shop the more students involved the more administration will like it(:

Paper makes a great brown cardboard boxes even better

I don't know if I would fly Lloyd in he would have the whole place covered in compost in no time(;

If you use the pallets, or make any kind of bin, only three sides are necessary. The open side is the access for tossing, turning and removing finished compost. I forgot to suggest previously that you have at least, the VERY least, two bins, one for compost that is finishing, and one that is "working" in which you are adding greens and browns. We stapled chicken wire to the bottom 2/3 of each bin on the inside so the compost materials wouldn't leak out, but cardboard would work as well.
We turn our compost when the mood hits us, or when I am really frustrated about something! Once a week is a good schedule, but you do realize that even when school is out the compost will still be there.
Hope you find a compost master to help you out!

If you do have a wood shop in your school, you can also add the sawdust to the pile. They are an excellent brown. Spread a thin layer between each layer of greens and it'll compost in no time.

The best thing to use is a Bokashi Bin. You can use brown paper, cardboard, and it is really good to use cardboards. Shred them into pieces before adding.

i finally have a visual concept of the compost bin!! thanks all for the explanations....pt03, i would glady fork over the $$ to fly you out and set our compost right if i had said funds- i'll have to wait for the lottery to hit :) Till then, i'll get with the shop teacher and figure out a way to make this a reality.

pm-i checked out the bokashi site (never heard of it before) and find it could be the perfect for use in my classroom..what makes it different from a lidded garbage can (aside from adding the bokashi mix)?

Don't forget to take pictures, lots of pictures, we likes pictures.

If you get the compost pile hot enough, throw in a can of ready to eat soup for a couple of hours and when a bunch of kids are around, pull it out and eat it right in front of them.

Girls usually go EWWWWW!, boys usually go COOOL! Guaranteed you'd be the talk of the school!

12 feet of 2 x 4 mesh welded wire fence fabric makes an excellent container for compost and although not as inexpensive as the free pallets is still fairly inexpensive.

Well just about everything sems to have been covered already but I can throw a couple of things into the mix to help.
1> Sawdust/shavings from the woodshop are great, but try to avoid using the plywood or particleboard shavings as plywood in the US is still generally made using formaldahyde

2> Since the piles take time to grow to a decent size before you start a new one have the kids bring in ALL their family's compostible waste for a few weeks in a closed bucket. That will jump start the first pile for you quickly so that next year your kids will have something to look at ealier than if you can only feed the pile a bit at a time. Same goes for adding the browns for the first few weeks.

3> I personally use a removable 4th side on my bins, more for looks than anything else (otherwise my dog would spend all day rummaging around in the pile for fun!). You might want to do this with your one just for neatness and as a way to help keep kids from getting too "messy" when they turn the pile. Since you are at a school there might also be something to be said for "dressing" the outside of the bins if you think it would be better. (this is purely asthetics).

If you get that first pile built up quickly then the kids will get more enthusiastic next year when the pile is ready to use. Kids aren't exactly patient and compost takes time!

And if you bring Lloyd on down, don't let him fly, ask him to drive down with 10 cubic yards of compost for you!
