Scared - but took the plunge!

After hanging around this forum for about 2 years and drooling over your photos, I decided to step up from my little collection of NOIDS and actually order some named varieties. I have leaves coming of Blue Dragon, Kermit, Pink Jade and Royal Rage. Now comes the part that worries me - getting them all to grow! I've read up on all the tips and I'm gonna do my best. I know I've chosen some variegated leaves which will make it harder, but do wish me luck.

Hey Anne,
Wishing you luck and in doing so I'm hoping a little karma will come my way. I grow all sorts of variegated violets. Buckeyes, Robs all have done well. The greens with creams, pinks, yellows etc. do very well,(anywhere I place them on the light stand, but I have some white and green Mac's that just drive me crazy! . I don't lose variegation (I grow cool) my issues I believe have more to do with light. Their leaves will get all bunched up or curl or don't lay flat. Some say the variegates need to be placed in the middle of light stand, that they need more light. Seems with these the more light- the worse they got. Not long ago I tried giving them much less light hours and further away from bulbs and that seemed to have done the trick. They are behaving much better. Sometimes you've got to make your own luck. Just remember that not all the "tips" may work for you. Keep on experimenting till you find what works with your growing conditions.
I'm glad you made the plunge, too! I still have my eight noids that I started out with and wouldn't think of giving them up. I can always count on them, even when Mac's Rhapsody isn't Rapturous or Infared isn't Incredible. My old Noids will make me smile.

Best of luck Anne! There's nothing quite as satisfying as seeing those first few leaves poke up through the soil, then separating the babies and having a new plant. I tend to buy established plants because I'm impatient, but it is nice to see mouse ears pop up.

You have a Phalaenopsis orchid (aka Moth Orchid) AOS Culture Notes. The "long stem" is called a spike and the "swells" on it are called nodes. It is possible for your spike to branch from one of the nodes, but this isn't guaranteed. You are more likely to see a new spike come from the base of the plant. Flowers on a Phalaenopsis may last 2-3 months, so a week isn't very long, but it's possible that the flowers you bought were already a little old or they could be fading due to the change of conditions when you brought them home. The orchid is potted in sphagnum moss, this is common way of potting phals. It retains a more moisture than typical bark mixes so the plant doesn't need to be watered as often. Whether you want to repot or not and in what medium is up to you. Bark is generally harder to overwater. You want to water your orchid when the medium is almost completely dry all the way through. Remember the top of the medium may be dry long before the bottom, but if you water before it is all dry you will eventually rot the roots. A good way to tell when it is time to water is the skewer test. Stick a bbq skewer or a pencil into the medium. When you think it's time to water, pull it out and touch it to your cheek or back of your palm, if it feels moist it's too soon. After a while you will be able to tell by the weight of the pot and have a good idea for how long it takes your plant to dry out. As to light, I would recommend that you stick right up against either that east or west window. Phals can take a few hours of direct morning or evening sunlight, and your plant will reward you with faster growth and more flowers. If you haven't already, I would also suggest reading the FAQ's (the link is at the top of the main forum page). I'm no engine mechanic, but I think that Honda and Kawasaki are better than the low and mid-level Kohler and B&S engines. For example, the Kohler Courage and B&S Intek engines. That much is clear. Whether they are better than the commercial grade Kohler and B&S engines is very debatable, and you'll get arguments on both sides. Some people just prefer the Honda and Kaw engines. Others will say the Kohler Command and B&S Vanguard engines are commercial grade engines and are just as good. I wouldn't have any problems buying a machine with the Kohler Command or B&S Vanguard engine, and would expect it to perform well and reliably for many years if normal maintenance was done. You will inevitably hear horror stories from someone about any machine or engine, regardless of make or model. There are lemons out there, whether Honda, Kaw or whoever made them. Don't let them scare you away from a good commercial quality engine regardless of whose name is stamped on it.

I think that you've made a wise choice in the plants you've got there, but maybe they would like less water than 'moist most of the time', if that's doable. Otherwise, I think they'll muddle along, because as you say it's excellent drainage. I don't think they'll double in size (it might be a little late for that) but they'll certainly will do some growing and that patch will be filled in in the next few years - it will look great. You've got a good beginning there. Sempervivums are hit-and-miss up here - can't recommend a place that would send them from Canada (you don't want that anyway) but I'll take a look at Mountain Crest - might have to order from them.... And your collection could be filled in further - the last time I checked I think there were about 1600 Semp species/cultivars/hybrids. I myself seem to be making little headway, though I recently added some to the collection. Edited to add that I'm going to get into SEVERE kitty trouble at this place. Sempervivum Supercalidicious

You can search this site and find at least a few threads discussing them and the same issue you have with the name. Briefly, the "rough" in the name is more rustic than scratchy. The Orkney is a heavier (heavier than your average tablecloth, but not like a blanket heavy), rustic weave linen that I think started it all. The smooth weave she offers is more like a tablecloth linen. The quality of the linen is really good and the workmanship (handmade -- people using sewing machines, not needle and thread -- in California) is top notch, and if something isn't right for you, they stand behind it. The linen is a unique feel for sleeping on -- smooth, but a little crisp. It breathes and helps keep you warm in the winter when layered or with a comforter in a duvet but keeps you cool in the summer. With each washing, they get softer, but they retain some body. You can press them if you are so inclined, but if you have a space where you can smooth out the edges and hang them to dry, they will be great. Or you can tumble them almost dry and then hang. BTW, linen dries quickly -- faster than cotton. It took me a long time to pull the trigger -- and DH wasn't sold on the idea of having to tuck in an unfitted sheet or on the idea of sleeping on linen, but I think he'd be happy to have nothing but now. In fact, the linen is on our bed 95% of the time. And I'm already thinking I will get a set for each of my sons when they eventually get married.

Good luck, Anne! I don't really think all variegated ones are harder either. Some may just be a little bull-headed about 'greening' up.

I agree with Mac about the noids. After awhile, you may get tired of "Beautiful But Fussy" and appreciate "Old Reliable" ;). I wouldn't mind having my old 'noid' (undoubtedly an Optimara/Rhapsodie from Lowes) that was just a plain dependable boring plant.

Oh yes - I have noticed that violets don't read and they don't follow instructions very well either :D. Candy Fountain is grown in the chilliest window in the house but it doesn't show any more variegation in winter than any other time. Fredette's Risen Star (a favorite) is beside it and is always variegated.

It's not really that difficult. (Don't tell, but I've even poked around to see if they were coming up.)

Thanks for the encouragement you guys. It's good to know that variegation doesn't necessarily mean a hard time starting them or growing them. I do still like my NOIDS - I have about 25 of them and wouldn't get rid of them just because they have no I.D., but I have been seduced by some of the photographs posted on this site. ;-) I've been drooling over Blue Dragon for quite some time...Eeeoeleven's current thread just reminded me how much!

I just opened my little box from Reed's and the leaves look great. I got as a bonus "Rebels Night Breezes." :-)
Royal Rage is a simply bee-u-tiful leaf, BTW!!

Question: do you all as a rule let the leaves rehydrate in tepid water before potting even if they don't look limp? Wouldn't it be in their best interest to be as plumped up as possible before I put them in the potting mix? I'm thinking I'll cut the stems per instructions and pop them into some clean cups for an hour or 2 while I eat my dinner and then pot them up after.

Hi Anne,
I only plump them if they seem limp to me. Other than that I put them into my light soil mix and cover them to retain humidity and to isolate them.

Thanks, Fred. I guess I didn't need to, but they didn't seem to be the worse for it when I potted them up - nice, crisp stems when I cut them on an angle before inserting them in the mix and then bagging them. One had some damage and wilting on the end of the leaf so I cut that off, leaving about 2/3 of the leaf intact. Should still be good, right?
