i would be very surprised that a potted plant has a tap root ... i would make up my mind by fall.. and plant them then ... especially if they are already leafed out ... make sure the pot is not sticking out of the ground .... it can cause big problems.. either mulch so its covered ... or tip it out of the pot.. and throw native soil in the bottom until the soil level is at the top of the pot .. and put the plant back in the pot .. ensure proper drainage and water all summer .... ken

I planted a "slow growing" 'conversation piece' azalea last year next to a gardenia. It grew so fast that it almost grew up and over the gardenia, so I moved it to a new spot this winter where it could grow. It was a 1 gallon specimen when planted. How big of a pot? I usually buy plants that are at least in 1 gallon pots, but you could raise the azalea in a container until it gets a little bigger. I guess it is worth a try. What have you got to lose? (besides a few dollars)

as gal said.. once its settled in the pot.. you can put your hand over the media ... with the tree between your fingers... and just slip the whole wad out of the pot.. observe... slip it back in ... easy peasy ... thats not a direct quote from her .. lol ... i have no clue why you would mess with the cold frame ... either plant it in fall ... or just slip it out of the pot and stick it in the veg garden or where ever ... sometimes it seems that you figure out ways. .to make the simple harder ... anyone ever suggest that to you ...lol .... ;) in my cold z5 MI sandy garden.. these are free seeding weed trees [but not aggressive seeders] ... i just dont see how babying them is necessary ... ken ps: a tap root is just another root ... after its held the babe there long enough to root into the soil ... after that ... it need not be a 'tap' https://www.yourdictionary.com/tap-into

I have some permanently in pots, 10 years now for some. As long as the pots are large enough and the rose does not get root bound they should be fine. For climbers they should be large enough to put a stand alone trellis in for supporting the rose. If the rose does get root bound you can do a root pruning. Cut the rose back some, slip out the root ball and shave the sides and bottom and refill the pot and replant the rose. But it should take a few years at least for that to happen. You don't say how small the other pots are. Do you have pictures? At any rate as bare roots they should be fine for the first season at least. I had a situation where I had to use ordinary dollar store buckets for a season and they did just fine. Eek! Garden soil is never a good choice for potting anything. It is too dense and heavy and will not drain properly. If you can, mix it with what ever you can find to lighten it up, sand, peat, perlite, whatever. Otherwise you'll have to watch very carefully to make sure your pots don't get water logged. Drainage is the key to roses in pots.
