Mine are already up and nice size already.They are still small enough to move however, so I shift them around a little.

They tend to flower in the first spring after their first growing year. So that's a full year for oriental poppies sown in the Spring, but only about 6 - 8 months for those sown in late summer/early fall. Depending on how well your fall sown seeds grew they may flower this year. And those from the bare roots are very likely to flower this spring. Lynda

Hi Jo, It is much warmer here in Oklahoma than where you live in NJ. I scattered California poppy & Shirley poppy seeds last week and they are up and growing! I also planted Tidy Tips and some other Spring flowering plants, and they are up too! I am just thrilled! No two gardens are ever the same and neither are planting & blooming times and conditions in different locations; Nor are they in the same town or even in the same neighborhood. If you still have snow on the ground, then it is not too late where you live to plant poppies IMHO. Give it a go! ~ Annie

G'Day! - me too, out to scatter - as if i wasn't scattered enough already! - PERFECT weather for it. Warm enough that it's a pleasure to go out, but with the assurence of enough cold to come to 'stratify" things natureally. - Remember, a good watering will "settle the seeds in," giving good soil adhesion and reduce the amount the birds pick out. If you feel the need to buffer against excessive cold, just scatter some dead leaves. A very thin layer will not significantly block the sunlight poppy seeds prefer for good germination but will reduce windchil along the ground surface. - Happy gardening, -vlad
