Tender loving care, sort of...

Oh my, I'm a guy. So as you know, we don't generally read instructions.

After planting two bare root roses from Edmund's 9 days ago, I learned about soaking first, and to not give high organic soil or feed. I did all of the above.

Needless to say I watered the sticks just about every other hour for 2 days to hopefully make up for not soaking.

I'm not sure how to get two pictures in a post, so here is the Chrysler Imperial. The Good as Gold is doing well too.

Wallflowers, (erysmium cheirii) are traditionally grown as biennials (often as part of a 'bedding out' system) but mine have been robustly perennial for over a decade. Nicotiana sylvestris is often good for another go-round, but both of these probably point up the shadings of classification and expectations between true biennials (Campanula medium), short-lived perennials or tender perennials grown as annuals. Have just been on a seed buying digitalis rampage after being hugely heartened by last years robust growth of fat rosettes, just beginning to extend skywards (D.purpurea, grandiflora, lutea) in our bedraggled and wild woods - expecting a froth of various umbellifers and many white foxglove spikes.

Thanks all! Denise - it gets pretty cold! Freezing, unfortunately! Daniella - Too funny! (waving knife!!) Seriously, she's to big to bring in. I'll have back-up cuttings & probably most here on the forum will have some of her too! :) Yay! That 'knife' time is fast approaching! Kylie - A MOWER!! How in the world? No - never mind! Just the thought & picture of it has left me numb! Lucy - I've been here almost two months. And to be honest - the only thing the neighbors do - is mow! I think I saw Kylie mowing over the neighbors brugs! It was the large flower bonnet flopping in the wind that gave her away! But seriously - not much planted in the yards around me - trees, shrubs, etc. No brugs! lol! Karen - Got your email! ;) And I want to see the two blooms too! lol! And the 'Cup of Gold' you sent me last year is much bigger now! :) I'll snap a pic of it tomorrow & shoot it off to you. Still no buds or blooms! But hey, I haven't killed it! lol! Ken, no fluffing for me. I scuffed up the turf about an inch, just enough to break up the dead turf. Soil was dry as a bone and crumbly all on it's own with no mechanical intervention, unless you are counting the actual digging. The only place we get run-off here is on the driveway, 500' of packed road rock. I still appreciate the tips, for those times when I do run across such situations. Will, it is deceiving...We have a few trees, but really very little considering we are on five acres and two of the trees are not plantable under, being in the dog yard (and one being an apple tree.) We are actually very exposed here. It makes for most excellent views but does not leave a lot of room for mystery. I am making it two of my goals to 1) create some spaces that will stop the eye but not block our best views and 2) find ways to create some mystery here in the wide open. Here is another reason to be grateful for your location, none of this: two winters ago it was drifted this deep over our entire driveway for two days following a huge blizzard! This was the path I had to shovel to the barn:

Lovely kitchen! Question: why did you choose to end the backsplash past the upper cabinet, but not the end of the peninsula countertop? I have an almost similar situation w/ my upper cabinet and countertop. HOWEVER, my peninsula countertop (butcherblock) is a different material from my cooktop countertop (marble). I'm planning to end my backsplash (marble) to line up w/ the upper cabinet, even though it'll go past the countertop into the butcherblock (hard to explain). Scott, at least your not like me and over did the watering. I followed the instructions to the letter and besides all of the rain we got I also watered mine lol.

Live and learn right? Yours looks great to me. Mine is turning yellow with black spots ... oops!

How long did it take to get your bareroots after ordering? I ordered Stephen's Big Purple but hasn't arrived yet.

I'm glad I prepared a really deep bed and worked better soil into the ground. I have excellent drainage there, so for as much I watered them the first 48 hours, the water would just sink into the ground. Here's a picture of the Good As Gold.

Thanks Scott, maybe I'm just being impatient after seeing yours *grin*
I soak mine and mix fresh soil but i also water with Miracle grow Rose formula right away. That's it. The last 2 did great with no sign of trauma so far.

I hope you post pics of yours and keep us updated!

I know it's hard to have patience, especially with something so bizarre as a bare root plant. I mean, who'da thunk? LOL

We had rain last night and they are getting nice sunshine today with more rain coming tonight. I think they look even bigger today than last night. Certainly not worthy of pictures.

I keep hearing in the caverns of my brain something that I read on this forum... "Roses love to grow". Just remember that. Apparently it is true.

Good luck with yours, and keep us posted. I'll do the same.

I read that it could be 8 to 12 weeks until a bare root rose will bloom. While I'm not interested in seeing copious blooms on the plants, and will likely remove some buds, I would like to see that the blooms look like this season. Time will tell.

Scot, those look like healthy roses starting to break dormancy to me. Not to worry! Just give them some time to grow and you'll have blooms in no time!

Same here Jim1961. Lots of rain. I've only hand watered mine 2x's. Loads of rain. Doesn't look like there is an end to the rain either. We get breaks from time to time but it's rained nearly every day.
