if you wiggle any of the other leaves, to they resist or just flop along?

I guess I'm not sure what you TOTALLY mean. They move but bounce right back. Would a video help? And do you see the one I didn't pull that's turning a lighter green? Should I get that off too? I believe they seem resistant to move??

if they'd flop, you'd notice ;-p

it's something i've encountered a lot recently, symptom of stem rot, in which case, you chop the stem until it looks all green and try and root what's left, if there is anything....

so if it isn't rot, you have other things to work with - when did you last re-pot for example, what dosage of fertilizer did you use, how do you usually water?

if you aren't losing bunches of leaves, then it could just be the natural renewal of the plant - those leaves just don't last forever.....

i'll wait for the others to offer an opinion now :-)

It looks like natural aging of the leaves. Leaves do not live forever. The outermost row contain the oldest leaves and they will yellow and die off. If you leave them on the plant long enough, sometimes they will get mushy and brown.

Remove when they start to yellow. At that point, they are through with their productive life.

If your leaves are wobbly and limp, (and it will be obvious), then there is something else going on. Over-watering and rot come to mind. But, from your pictures, it looks like natural senescence.

Linda,I was thinking it could use a repot,looking at the soil through the leaves,it looks worn out also no visible evidence of perlite.i am thinking refreshing the soil would help,also removing the old yellow leave would allow space for new root formation,also what I have notice when I repot my violets they just start growing more,after they adjust.velleta

I think you're right. The soil does look heavy. Re-potting also does wonders, too!

I just re-read and noticed you have had this plant for four or five years. When did you last re-pot?

I think it's been year........I think. How often do I repot them? And how much bigger of a pot? Should I put her in a bigger pot? And how much bigger? I've just pulled three more leaves off all from the bottom so maybe rot? If I repot and it is from over watering will I be able to clean her up enough to hopefully save her? Thanks to EVERYONE for your advice, it really is MUCH APPRECIATED! :)

You need a SMALLER pot,not bigger.a third the size of the plant.so a nine inches plant needs a three inches pot.also add lots of perlite to your soil to lighten it.if its root rot then you would need to cut the top off above where the rot is and replant the top in a small pot and keep slightly moist and let it grow new roots.about rotating it this can be done each time you water, you give it a quarter turn each time so it grows evenly.also if you remove the top and replant,don't fertilize until it has rooted.this can cause damage.Velleta

Your plant looks healthy. Repot with new soil would be my first suggestion. Sometimes heat kind of makes old leaves go brown and limp. I had a few plants show the same 'glassy' brown leaf drop. I keep the central air on all the time when it's hot, but occasionally open windows to air out the house. And I enjoy the heat once in a while. If more leaves would of dropped, turned rotten- I would of said too heavy soil, overwatering. But, your plant looks ok.
Outer leaves die naturally- so it's expected.

Variegated plants love cooler temps or they lose the variegation. So, you seem to be doing everything ok. ;)

Thank you SOOO MUCH EVERYONE!!! I will repot in the right size pot tomorrow (later today apparently) thanks again for ALL the advice. I guess just one more question.... How long will it take for new roots to grow if it is root rot?

You should try to re-pot about every six months. Sometimes (usually), it doesn't happen that often but it's a goal we shoot for.

If it's root-rot, you will not get new roots. You will almost certainly get a dead plant . Take a leaf or two to re-start just in case. And don't let it bother you. It happens all the time and it has happened to all of us. It's just life in the grow lane.

I do think that re-potting will do wonders, though.

I have saved plants with root rot. Are AVs more difficult?

All depends on how early you catch it and how ruthlessly you remove any rotted bits...
IME sometimes even perfectly healthy looking leaves off such a plant rot within a day or two, other times, the tiny bit of crown left roots and everything works out... (And any result inbetween)
It's a gamble really, and likely depends a lot on whether the environmental cause of the problem persists.
