You HAVE to try Star of the Nile

I just wanted to "plug" Star of the Nile." This is our 3rd yr. w/her (own-root from Roses Unlimited). I don't have a camera (yet), but she looks exactly like pictures 1 & 11 on the helpmefind.com site. She is blooming like crazy right now, and the blooms are hard to describe...exquisite & smell delicious! The kind of blooms that make your heart almost melt...so pretty I felt like crying, if that makes sense. I hope more people give her a try....I don't hear much about her, but she just GLOWS. :0) Phyl

Star of the Nile and Comtesse du Cayla are the current leaders of my short list. I will probably wait until availability is easier and then acquire those two. And maybe Belle Epoque. :)

I love it, too. Mine is a two-year old own root, but it is BEAUTIFUL - such an unusual color!

OK, I know this is going to sound x-rated, but I would really LOVE to have some of your hairy balls. :) Also, the sunset hibiscus and any other hibiscus you might have. From your list of wants, I have whirligig zinnia and there may be other items on my list that would interest you. Thanks Michelle

Actually -and reluctantly, I think that's a good label. At first glance it seems to state the obvious, but like a 'wet floor' sign, sometimes we need a reminder of the obvious. BTW, does any one else use a borax rinse on materials which might be exposed to sparks or flame? I do this with the kitchen curtains, the rug in front of the fireplace, and potholders; and [when I camped] the jackets and jeans which might be sparked from a campfire. Lilod, I don't know how effective it would be on nylon, but a similar method is used on many fabrics [including the velvet/velveteen drapes] in the theater to make them fire-retardant. (For those who are wondering, one recipe: 9 oz borax, 4 oz boric acid, 1 gallon water; saturate item, gently squeeze out excess liquid, air -not machine- dry; repeat after each washing).

aegis... We are in the same boat. :-) I had also stayed away from roses because I am an organic gardener. Over the years I have added very few roses. Bonica, a white rugosa were my only roses for a long time. Then I tried Penelope an old fashioned musk with a nice fragrance but is really only a one time bloomer and I have it against a fence I am trying to train it to. The foliage is pretty clean and turns a nice color in the fall. The last few years, I added Knock Out Red [which is really a deep pink to me], and last year I tried a few others that were reportedly disease resistant. The Knock Out Roses are stupendous! Some mild fragrance but very clean foliage and continuous bloom in a compact size. I plan on getting more. I have 3 I bought this year that the jury is still out on. I am going to see how they do next year before reporting on them. I could very easily catch the rose bug, but I am about out of full sun locations to put them. Thanks for sharing your photos and experiences. :-) loretta.... I do like New Dawn and have considered using it and still may. Heritage is a David Austin rose, isn't it? Agree with the Rosa glauca as a nice background shrub rose. Did you mean the red twigged cornus? Are there variegated salix shrubs? Does salix require full sun? I have two oakleaf hydrangeas and even though I am zone 6, I am having a little trouble getting them established and in the right position. I have a lot of dry part shade and this year with drought conditions I was limited to how much supplemental water I could give it and they look awful right now. I am still hoping I can figure a way to make them happy because I do really love that shrub. I would defnitely call them a star performer, looking good all season. thanks loretta.. :-)

My experience is that when the flower first opens, it has a spectacular strong fragrance. A day later, the fragrance is completely gone. So in that sense I think both views are correct. In my garden, some roses hold their fragrance until they shatter. 'Star Of The Nile' is not one of those roses. Lovely flower, extremely poor disease resistance.

Glad you are enjoying SOTN, Opheliathornvt...and nickelsmumz8, hope you can get one. I will have to look up Comtesse du Cayla. :0) We have Belle Epoque, it blooms like crazy, but I'm a little disappointed in the fact that the blooms blow VERY FAST and quill (I can't stand quilling!) I am always deadheading it, but wish it were nicer for bouquets. It's pretty, but not good for my vases. :0) Phyl

Phyl..how big does your Star of the Nile get? I have been thinking about getting this rose.

I am not Phyl, but my SotN is six year old and approx 6x5 feet. Nice looking upright bush. If I wouldn't prune approx 1/3 off each spring it would be much bigger by now, I guess.
It likes to produce suckers, which is a good thing for such a beauthiful rose in my opinion. You can have several SotN in a few years :)

There was a thread a couple of weeks back where many people reported their plants didn't grow as well as Olga's. Not exactly a surprise, since Olga's a rose genius. My SotN has bloomed reliably, but growth has been pretty slow. I can't see it becoming 5' wide.

I went outside and checked...right now it's only probably close to 3 feet tall, about same width.
Where in central New York are you? We're in Baldwinsville, just outside Syracuse. I have to prune dead canes on virtually all my roses in April to about 6 inches, otherwise I'm sure it would be much taller! The blooms are incredible though. Thanks for your input, Olga. Thanks Olga...6x5...Wow...I do have a spot for a 3 footer..Phyl I am in the city of Sherrill..just outside of city of Oneida..about 40 miles East of you..I have to prune down pretty close to the ground as well...I might put this one on my list ! Thanks!
