weeping cherry tree has no leaves nor flowers...

Bought a weeping willow about a month and a half ago... Planted it, watered it good...

Still have no leaves nor any flowers.

Some dark brown leaves have sprouted on the base of the trunk and up the trunk until you get to where it was grafted. But nothing esle... I took a key and scratched a branch to make sure the top half wasnt dead... it was still bright green...

What should I do? Is it in shock? I tried some liquid worm poop the nursery recommended, but that did nothing....

Any ideas? I have also plucked off the leave sprouts that were under the grafted section...

Since you have green cambium above the graft, I think all you can do is wait and see. I might give the nursery a heads-up that you are having problems with it. If any more leaves sprout from under the graft, rub them off as well.

Keep watering - stick a finger down about 2-3 inches, next to the root ball. If it is dry, water; if still damp, wait and try again in another day or so. Water slowly and deeply - you want the water to soak in to the bottom of the root ball. If you haven't mulched, do so - as wide as you can, at least out 2-3', no deeper than 4", and no mulch in the 2-3" next to the trunk.

Is this a weeping cherry or a willow? You say both, so I am not sure. The action to take is the same, but I would worry more about a willow not leafing out, as they are usually so quick to do so.

The id card that came with it said it was a weeping cherry willow tree....

I originally bought it from walmart. I lknow might sound dumb, but the walmart around my home actually has decent prices and decent nursery.

When I picked it up all of their weeping cherrys were not blooming expect for maybe one or two... So i grabbed one that wasn't blooming either thinking maybe it would bloom and have leaves in a few weeks.

Ill check the moisture level by the root ball and let you know... I have mulched it, so thats good to go. When I did plant it I used a mixture of the original soil and mg tree soil.

cherry blossom is incredibly short lived in my z5 ... a couple days at best ... it was near done blooming when you bought it.. and the transplant finished it off for this season ... in my z5 the flower buds are incredibly sensitive to frost/freeze after winter.. and prior to bloom ... your annual show will vary based on such ... all you should be worried about .... is getting it to live thru summer.. and you should be all set .... where is two face.. TO THE BATCAVE.. lol .. ken

Definitely a bad graft with the standard cherry suckering. This happens to a lot of ornamental fruit trees. You'll have to cut the white flowered trunk off at the collar (just past where it meets the main trunk). It sounds like both trunks are the same size? That means this problem started as soon as you planted it. A picture would help a lot. Make a CLEAN cut on an ANGLE just past the branch collar. It is probably too thick to use loppers, so purchase a decent pruning saw (Lowes, HD sell these), and make a starter cut at the bottom of the branch, angling up and in toward the tree, then do the rest of the cut from the top of the branch, angling toward the bottom cut (away from the tree). The cut is on an angle to shed water. You must do a cut on the bottom first so that when you cut from the top it doesn't pull down and rip the bark along the main trunk, which can kill the tree. Do this now or wait until next year and do it in early spring before the buds break. Do not wait much longer, because right now the cherry will use it's energy to heal the wound, but if you wait until May or later it will have used most of it's energy in flowering and growing new branches and will not heal quickly at all. The standard cherry will grow about 20 feet high. Depending on the rootstock, it may even bear fruit. Standard cherries are hardy trees, and it will definitely end up killing your weeping graft if you don't get rid of it soon. As for it looking odd, don't worry, in a few years the weeping tree will grow to the other side with proper pruning. Right now the other tree is preventing it from growing that direction. Once it is gone the other side will start to thrive. The sun exposure alone will help a lot. Don't expect too much this year though, since it will be focusing its energy on healing.

a cherry is a cherry .. as to leafing out.. certain CULTIVARS may vary according to flowers ... most likely a goner ... it should be showing signs of leafing by now ... you can give it another month.. but even if it leafs out ... there probably isnt going to be much left by the time you trim out all the dead stuff ... we dont know if it was grafted... but if so ... the suckers that come up may or may not be true to the form you had ... and odds are.. the root mass isnt dead.. and something will come out of the ground ... but that is just a guess .. you have a lot of lawn there.. perhaps you ought to contemplate a replacement or two.. and give this one a month or two to see what happens ... ken

I live in Staten Island, NY. We bought a weeping cherry about 8 years ago. Every year I cut off more dead branches, but haven't seen any new growth. It blooms every year and is covered with green leaves, but some of the tips are dead and need to be pruned again. We have a lot of red clay soil, we had amended a portion of the yard with top soil and peat moss. My husband says the tree looks nothing like a weeping tree anymore, all the branches have been trimmed so it seems to have just a crown of leaves. What can I do to encourage more new growth?

I have the same problem, except my leafless tree is a Kousa dogwood. I bought it from a good local nursery in March and had the professionals plant it. Its clearly alive and has hundreds of tiny leaf buds, but they don't seem to be growing. I think I've been watering it correctly. Does anyone know what might be going on? I examine it 2-3 times a day. I've heard that a watched pot never boils: could it be that a watched tree never sprouts leaves? I would be so grateful if someone could explain what's happening--er, I mean NOT happening.
