Roses on clearance at Lowe's

Last year I had bought several roses on clearance at Lowe's and found them again today. Since I had pretty good luck with the ones last year, I decided to buy a few more. I got Royal Highness, Mirandy, Peace and JFK for $2 each. My daughter also got Pascali and a climbing Joseph's Coat for the same price. I know what I'm going to be doing for the next few days!

Thats what got me started-Lowes discount table.Bought a couple[heirloom and Q.E.]that any knowledgeable Rosarian would have throw in a garbage can.Six years later people stop in stare at them in awe.I had no idea what all those funny spots were.lol

JFK isn't worth $2, but the rest are worth a shot! Let us know what happens!

katortott, if you do decide to repot it eventually, try to follow karls advice on not disturbing the rootball when taking the rose out of it's pot. Here is something that'll help. The small white roots you saw were anchor roots. Feeder roots are tiny and almost invisible that fall away with the soil. To plant a potted bush without losing the soil cut the bottom off the pot with a razor knife, but first dig the hole making it half again as wide as the pot. Cut up opposite sides of the pot half way. Secure the cut sides with masking tape wrapped around the pot. Finish cutting the pot the rest of the way to the top, then secure it with masking tape wrapped around the top. You'll end up with a pot cut into three pieces but held together with masking tape. You can also use rubber bands or string to secure the two pot halves. Pick up the pot holding the cut bottom in place to make sure the bush and soil don't fall out the bottom. Place the pot in the hole and slide the bottom out from under the pot. Pull soil in around the pot to just below the lower piece of masking tape. Cut the tape on both sides. Continue pulling soil in until just the top tape is exposed. cut that tape on both sides. Pull the two pot sides straight up. (The soil pulled in around the pot will hold the root ball together.) Finish filling the hole and water to fill in any voids. If done properly, the bush will not know it's been moved and should continue to grow normally. Keep it watered well until it shows signs of growth, then water as you normally would. If done correctly, it'll experience no planting stress. You should water the potted plant well before you transplant to help keep the soil together, not so important if planted as directed above. I'd get them transplanted as soon as possible to allow plenty of time for the roots to grow into the surrounding soil and get well established before winter. For plants in thick vinyl pots that won't cut easily with a razor knife, I use a saber saw or Dremel rotary saw to cut away the bottom and up the sides.

Was there yesterday -- should've posted yesterday but was busy with hubby's project. I was sent to get an electrical part, but snuck over to the garden center for a quick run through the clearance racks. There were SO many racks ! They had been marked half price, but as I was looking the manager was putting up signs that racks were 25 cents and 75 cents. Some of the larger plants looked fine ! I took home some great looking one-gallon daylilies and flax lily for 75 cents each. They also had what looked like trumpet vines for the same price. If you want Knockout roses, they had a LOT of them being marked down. You probably could have gotten them for a song. I don't know what the price went down to, but the way she was marking them, they were gonna be really really cheap ! If you're a clearance rack kinda gardener, keep an eye on this Lowes. But save some for me ! patty

i agree that JFK ain't worth $2. He ain't worth 50 cents.I wouldn't even give a n ickel for one of them.

Odd, my JFK is usually quite pretty. He's not so great recently, too much rain and none of my plants are too thrilled. However, JFK is blooming like crazy and was very pretty before the rain. He is in a container by himself and away from anything that might encourage a fungi or thrip to even walk past him but except for occasional hort. corn meal and neem(which may be worth as much as y'alls JFKs!) I don't even spray. Maybe I just got lucky or he's really into zone 8? I'm not even a good gardener...

The first 2 years , I didn't get much of a bloom and then it was scraggly or dirty and the blooms caught rain and tipped over. This year JFK has suprised me. It took a long time I Guess, and now I see the value of JFK.....WOW.......... I use Insect soap spray to keep the bugs from chomping on the leaves and the edges of the blooms.

I wish mine would clearance their roses for $2 but they just got a new shipment this week! They have tons. (7b)

My Lowes clearanced them out for 1.00. I just got there as they were selling the last of them. They had a few left but they had tons of black spot. Gotta love when Lowes marks their plants down, wish HD would do that.

I checked my Lowe's today. 40% off was the best I could find. There was nothing there I couldn't live without--especially since they hadn't been watered in a while.

I just got back from there and no clearance at all and they have got racks and racks and racks. They have so many I will be expecting a sale soon i hope.

They had 3 of those metal shelf carts full of knock out roses. Mostly red and 4 big tables of roses...most of those not in bloom and have not been dead headed. They look awful to those who do not know better.

I knew I had remembered reading something about JFK on this forum, and on the web, but I wasn't sure if it was *good* or *bad*. But, I only have one white rose and wanted another. Maybe I'll have good luck with mine, and if not, $2 is so cheap, it won't be hard to let it go.

At Lowes, they still have lots of roses that weren't marked down yet--- tons of knockouts. And the flower carpet roses were only marked down to $5. I would have liked to have a coral flower carpet, but my daughter has one and has rooted them easily, so I'll probably try that. I've got a red one and a yellow one and like them a lot--- lots of blooms.

It's really hard for me to drive by Lowe's without stopping by to check out the clearance plants. I've bought all kinds of things there for super cheap prices, and almost all of the plants have perked right up when I got them in the ground. They also sell torn bags of potting soil really cheap. I have discovered that they usually have more reduced plants in the very back outside the fenced area-- more to choose from.
