Lavender Lassie question

Ok..got a totally different question on LL. She is 3 years old from a cutting and so far she only blooms in the fall..very strange..is it worth keeping?? she does take up a good bit of prime real estate. For that kind of size what else could I put in?

I'm going to follow this post, Mari, and add another question....does LL need more sun than something like Alberic Barbier (she's sharing an arch with him who is doing great, and she's languishing)...? Perhaps, it's a sun issue? moisture? does she take longer to get established?

I have 2 Lavender Lassies. Both of them get some shade. One has always been puny. The other is fabulous and has throw itself up into an oak tree. It blooms spring to fall. The puny one doesn't bloom much. The large one just seemed to have gotten a better start.

I didn't know she could look that beautiful. Thanks for sharing that with us. It's a gift to have some roses inside I think. Sometimes I take some fragrance roses to a lady that runs a storage yard where we used to have a boat. She lives there all alone and has no plants there except for a few houseplants in the office and in her trailer. It makes her so happy when I bring roses on my way to somewhere.

Kathy, yours is absolutely beautiful. I remembered yours being huge. I do have a spot like your size on a plot btw my neighbor and me. I am still debating and have to amend soil there if I want it transferred there by Spring. Perma, I had some sort of greenish eggs underneath the leaves. So, I was washing Ebb Tide with soapy water then as I bend the the older branches a young shoot broke off from neighbouring branch. Now, it is a cutting. A good 8 inches long, I think maybe even 9. I will let you know how it turns out. That just happened like a few hours ago..haha

I live in a great climate for Hybrid Musks (PNW). In my garden, mine are in their 2nd full season in the ground and it looks like I'll be getting three flushes from them this year. The HM's I have are: Felicia...a stupendous rose, with a HUGE flush...it's currently having its 2nd Cornelia...also having its 2nd flush Francesca...my least bloomy, but also gets the least sun...currently in its 2nd flush Prosperity....a band planted this spring (June) and its bloomed almost continually Sibelius....its first flush lasted 2 months! It's really a continuous bloomer, but I cut it back hard to get rid of the huge amount of spent flowers. It's gearing up for a 2nd flush Penelope...also in a shadier spot, it's gearing up for it's second (small flush)...I think I'll move it to a sunnier spot Buff Beauty....this has been a slow grower for me-planted as a band this spring Darlow's Enigma...the only rose in my garden that's completely un-irrigated. it blooms constantly until Aug, then peters out, but the foliage stays really healthy and nice looking. I think it would bloom continually for me if I watered it. I'm planning on moving it this spring to a better spot Kathleen....still in a pot, but blooming in flushes which I'm so pleased about! A truly beautiful, ethereal rose Sally Holmes...blooms in flushes almost all year long, in part sun Lyda...I'm saving the best for last here. One of my most beautiful roses, in a quiet way. Blooms in flushes for me in part sun, where the blooms last for weeks! In full sun, the blooms washed out and lasted less than a week I fertilize my roses with horse manure and Rose Tone in the spring, and try to repeat the Rose Tone after each flush. I would say the HM's bloom faster if they are deadheaded after a flush. I also water my roses A LOT!! I think that helps with the 2nd flush in particular as that happens in the driest part of our summer (August). I hope that info helps. It's so nice to be able to contribute here instead of only asking questions!! I am still a newbie rose grower, but I've definitely learned some things already.

mendocino rose - up a oak tree???? How far up???? I just (Saturday) planted one in this cute "crop circle" bed - sized for 3' on centers. Maybe I should save myself a backache and unplant it immediately.

Jody, you need to allow at least 5' for a shrub with pruning, and it could fill more space.

Mine put on a huge summer display and just a little repeat bloom in summer and fall. 10'+ tall with morning sun and afternoon shade.

mendocino rose, this one is anything BUT stunted..I'm just wondering if I can expect better bloom on her..when she bloomed last fall I thought for sure I'd have spring flowers..NADA..ZILCH..and she has a prime spot in my front bed.

Lori..I could live with that and let the other plants carry the load during the rest of the year..Im just still waiting..ok..Im not too patient :)

This one has a huge spring bloom at the Riverbanks Zoo Garden in Columbia,SC. It is around 6X6 feet with a big pruning in the late winter.

Hello Mari! We're in different zones but I would think yes definitely you should be seeing blooms on Lavender Lassie. Here's a early flush on mine at age 3.

All I can say is one of mine blooms more than the other. Maybe the soil is just better in that spot. The one that's in the tree: There is a branch over hanging the rose. It got taller until it got caught in the branch. The canes that received that support climbed nearly 20 feet. The rest of the rose is fairly normal like arching at 6 feet.

That's pretty strange. The older mine gets the more it blooms..this spring the 2nd flush began before the first one was fully over. Did your plant come from me?

I don't know much about this but have heard that some shoots are "blinds", meaning they'll never bloom. But yours blooms in fall. Maybe I took a cutting of a shoot that hadn't bloomed. 99% of the time I take cuttings just after a shoot has bloomed. If you'd like to try another LL plant, I will root you one and send it later. Or you can have unrooted cuttings. It's a terrific hm and I hate it that yours is not a good bloomer considering the real estate it takes up.

I think I'll unplant LL this weekend - back in a pot for the time being. I had this lavendar/purple thing going in that bed and I thought LL would look wonderful - but the size thing trumps color.

I'm planting a HM over a big stump in the east yard - I may add LL to that planting with support. There is room there for a rose to stretch.

Linda,,thanks for the offer..Im thinking I may move her out of that bed and try her somewhere else..if that doesnt work I'll try to find one that is a couple of years old..PATIENCE IS AT AN END..sorta LOL.
