Help Please... 1st year winter sowing...

This is my first year winter sowing. I have a list but am not sure if I should do them all now or if some of them should not be done until later. Or if some of them should just be threw in the garden to grow there.

Please help this is my first year doing a lot of seeds... I am in Zone 7 and heres my list:

Petunias

Impatients

Black Eyed Susans

Astilbe

Salvia

Columbine

Foxglove

Fushia

Hollyhock

Verbena

Baby Breaths

4 Oclocks

Lantana

Lavendar

Snapdragons

PLEASE HELP ... I am really excited to do this but want to make sure I do it right.

Oh yeah one more question. Can you winter sow veggies? If so which ones? I normally do them in flats inside but don't have great luck with seeds inside growing so end up having to do them late right in the garden....

Hollyhock
Baby's Breath
Lavender (make sure it drains well)
Coneflower
Lisianthus (I think)
Coneflower
Shasta Daisy
The others I'm not sure but I think there are several more that are safe. Have fun! Look up the others online. If they are perennial - sow away!

Frank: I'm guessing your plants are 2 - 3' tall from the picture. How much sun do yours get? Mine are in direct sun for 8-10 hrs.. If mine are getting what they need next year I expect, but don't really know, that they will be upwards of 4' tall. Maybe not. This year's fruit are double or more the size of my Latham and Heritage berries, a pleasant suprise indeed. The Purple Royalty I planted in Spring/08 did very little and of course no fruit in 08. This year, the plant put out 5 or 6 small tasty fruit on the 2 measly floricanes and about a dozen beautiful primocanes for next year, can't wait. I'll try and get some pictures tomorrow as it is dusk right now. Hope the hair dryer isn't plugged in. Michael

Help with seedlings.....my 1st post in years so please bear with me.

I had half-dozen seedlings last year. I had to move one early on because it was in the path of the vicious plant-eating lawnmower. I put it in a small pot and put it under the mama plants leaves until later in the season when I gave it away. By that time, the others were big enough to dig as well. I left one next to the mama plant as a "backup". I was just admiring it a few moments ago.

Hi, Tammy!

There was a recent thread about WS veggies, but for the life of me, I can't seem to locate it.

So the answer to your question, is YES, you can WS herbs and veggies. Because I'm two zones colder than you, my dates would not be helpful to you. You should be able to sow any cool season veggies and herbs now though, and then wait until a little closer to your last frost date to sow warm season veggies, such as beans, cucumbers, squash, and melons.

I've already put out lettuce and spinach.
