I would agree that it looks like a virus, and perhaps RMV, but could be something else -- Rose Spring Dwarf can also cause this sort of vein clearing, especially on the first spring flush of growth. Are some of the leaves also curled up an the shoots dwarfed? If not, it's more likely rose mosaic.

Malcolm, I've always wondered -- how common is Rose Spring Dwarf Disease?
I saw a case years ago that I thought might be that, but not since.

That is almost certainly one of the viruses that infects roses, but as Dr. Manners points out, it might be something other than RMV (aka Prunus Necrotic Ringspot Virus)

Dr. Manners, i just went to look at the bush. Everything else looks normal. It's just resting from the first bloom flush.

I have this rose growing in a 1/2 wine barrel. I will remove it since I don't want to keep any virused plants around. Do I need to remove all the soil to plant another rose there?

Wait-- lower leaves that are dying from waterlogging or perhaps some other cause can show vein-clearing. If these are new leaves, it is probably RMV. Or there might be a crop of RMV leaves of the same age elsewhere on the plant.

Basically, if the leaves are crisp, I would think RMV. If the leaves are wilted or dying, I would think not.

Looks more like waterlogging or lack of sunlight on lower/inner leaves to me. Basically what Michael said. If they get limp and drop after a while, or fall easily off with only little touch, then it's just that. If not, then it may be a virus. Where on the plant were these leaves?

I was also wondering if these could be symptoms of a physiological problem. Sometimes nutrient deficiencies cause venal chlorosis (& overwatering can create temporary nutrient deficiencies).

I recently purchased an own root Penelope from a local nursery.

I would not pull the plant out just yet.
My guess is it's not RMV.
Inform where you bought it from that it might have a problem but you want to give it a few weeks before giving it back.

I've had plants like that that once they got some sun etc they were fine. Usually plants that are boxed with no sun or water will arrive like that.

Seems to be following the veins too closely to be RMV. My experience with RMV is the yellowing is random. I vote nutrition or PH of the soil

I'll try feeding and watch the watering. These were all small lower leaves that were out of the sun.

The plant was not shipped. Went to the nursery to pick it up. I was really surprised to see the leaves because it's not a budded plant and I know the people who propagate from their mother plants and really didn't think they'd propagate from virused plants.

Diane, I'm glad you came back. Given the location of the leaves, I bet they are just discards. In my experience, RMV leaves come in that way on the new growth when the weather conditions favor it.

Paul, While it does not match the symptoms of "line-pattern" mosaic, which zigzags between the veins, it does perfectly match the "vein banding" symptom of mosaic. If this were simply physiological stress of some sort, I'd expect more yellowing of the leaf in general. So while I can't prove that it is a virus and not simply a physiological stress, the symptoms are perfectly right for it. I don't recall ever seeing precisely these symptoms on a non-infected plant, but have see it on infected plants many times. Certainly less common than "mosaic" or "line-patern" or "waermark" symptoms, but still typical.

In agreement with MM, I've seen this vein clearing on roses that at other times showed other symptoms. Europeana was especially bad with this one year when I had it where the soil dried rapidly. Now that one of them is in the ground, (near where a drip irrigation drips more than it should), it is mostly zig-zag symptoms now in times of stress.

Malcolm, it is one of the looks RMV can have, but as you know it can also be the look of a dying leaf. I think the key point is that these were small, old, lower leaves. When I had a waterlogging episode with two plants some years back, the lowest leaves on main shoots had their veins turn yellow as they died. I've also seen it on old interior leaves that apparently were just being discarded as useless, and on potted plants that were defoliating after being shipped in summer.

Michael, Looking back through the thread, I see no indication that these are old, lower leaves? Did the OP ever say that?

And in the case of your waterlogging episode -- when the veins cleared out, did the rest of the leaf stay this deep green? I've seen stressed leaves with vein banding, but only when the areas in between were also fading or yellowing quickly. These are deep green between the bands. And so I've not seen this exact symptom from dying leaves. Not to say yours didn't, just that I've not seen it.

Malcolm, you are correct about the waterlogged leaves, mine were light green and limp with yellow veins. But I'm pretty sure I've seen the darker green with vein-clearing on senescent leaves.

In her next-to-last post, the OP said "These were all small lower leaves that were out of the sun."

Sounds like I should wait and see what develops on this rose.

If it does show continued signs of virus, do I need to remove all the soil from the wine barrel before replanting?

The virus is in the roots but not in the soil. I wouldn't change the soil myself. If the rose has virus, it will show on new growth from time to time.
