Small maple-like bush/tree identification, please

In Eastern Ontario, this tree is over 5 years old (maybe much older) and is about 7 feet tall with multiple trunks bushing from a single base. The leaves are opposite, 2-2.5 inch wide, three lobed with u and v shaped sinuses and ragged edges, and it has double sumara seeds forming. Pictures below.

I never even knew morus alba existed until the weird leaf topic was made.

Is this another example?

And are they, indeed, taking over North America?

I think the sumara (winged seeds) rule it out as a mulberry. I'd also expect more "balloon-shaped" lobes from morus.

Usually a neglected weeping cherry is beyond redemption - too many disease issues, too many graft failures. Not worth the effort for two weeks of flowers :-) The type of hydrangeas trained into tree forms are paniculatas (eg. PeeGee) - these are the most sun tolerant of all the hydrangeas and flowering will be greatly reduced if in too much shade. I'd look at a standard (tree form) dappled willow - Salix integra 'Hakuro Nikishi' - or a dwarf Japanese maple. There are dozens that will stay within your height requirements (would it hurt to get taller?), they appreciate shade and most have a very sculptural form that makes an attractive visual screen.

Thanks everyone for your quick answers! Saltcedar: I just did a search on Syringa meyeri on the internet and I think you're right, those pictures look exactly like what we have in our garden. Thanks a lot. On pruning: I think indeed I pruned too much unnecessarily, I wanted to clear the way to the back of the garden and thought it would all grow back quickly. It will have blooming this year, I can see the buds, but less than expected. I do have a lot to learn! I come from the Caribbean and live now in Belgium (zone 8), this is my first garden "of my own" that we have since a year and a half ago. I'm glad we have this lilac, it is indeed a beauty! Hmmmm...yea, I agree about the large bush being a Hazel of some sort. The leaves and overall form look very similar. What do you think about the smaller plant actually being a small Hawthorn tree? The leaves look similar but I don't think this one has thorns. Are there thornless Hawthorns?

It would not be Morus alba because that one has alternate leaves and it has fruits, not samaras.

This certainly could seem to be a type of Maple (Acer) based on the opposite leaf arrangement and the forming seed capsules.

Acer ginnala, although great fall color it is becoming quite invasive.

I was astounded when you mentioned they are becoming invasive.......and checked it out to find that in certain localities they are. Seems they can go in this direction where summers are cool. Mine doesn't go the nice red in autumn, but a dirty gold........some amurs will. And I never have a heavy setting of samara and am just now finding a few volunteers under the tree and it's been there maybe fifteen years or more by now. Mine is gorgeous and thriving.........but our summers can be hot and I suspect it affects the reproductive capabilities.
