What does Joe Pye look like in dormancy?

Danell Hiltz

I've been reading the threads on Joe Pye, in one someone's mother cut it down because she did not like looking at an 8 foot dead thing. I was thinking of putting in Eupatorium purpureum ÂGateway 5 Tall x 2-3 Wide; is this accurate and can anyone tell me what it may look like when it goes dormant?

I've also read that they have really woody crowns so can be a bear to divide and/or move. I'm new to gardening and want to avoid what may be a mistake or something I can't take care of but this is beautiful. I thought it would look great at back of border between two tall, narrow, blue green conifers (ie Juniperus V. Monbells).

Please help. Oh, my yard is West facing. Summers in the 90s and triple digits, clay soil with Ph of 7-7.5. I have a drip system so am prepared for the "lots of water" thing.
