Does this look like purple Joe-Pye Weed?

I didn't WS this, it is already growing in a nice big healthy clump in the garden of my rental house. I've only ever seen chocolate joe-pye as a seedling/one-year old tiny plant. But this sure looks like it. The color in person is actually a much deeper "chocolate." What do you think?

If it is, I'll definitely be saving seeds from it. Heck, even if it isn't, I'll save seeds cause I like it.

I thought it looked a little like that too, but it isn't. lol I got it at a garden center last fall, they were dividing plants up I got two starts, it was marked Joe Pye Weed. Besides being listed as a Butterfly plant. I really do not know nothing about it. Today on break I was looking at a garden book and decided to see when Joe Pye weed bloomed. That is when I noticed the leafs on my plant looked totally different then the one in the book. I was too busy to check it out so I thought I would see if anyone here knew what it was. I did find after I posted this Eupatorium cannabinum. But it still does not look like what I have.

I have E. purpurea ssp. maculatum (Spotted Joe Pye Weed) and mine did bloom first year from ws'n seed (the lone survivor of 5 seedlings). It wasn't spectacular though and plants were only about 16" tall...bloom occurred just before the first frost and they never had a chance. One of the slowest perennials I've ever grown. Last year was a little better...more blooms at about 4.5' tall. I'm sure if I gave it all the water it wants to grow best it could have been much taller! This year should be a good one:D BTW this one was planted in one location that first spring and after making a new bed that fall I transplanted it there in early October. Haven't transplanted a large mature one so can't comment on that. I do hear that some people go around the crown in spring or fall with a spade and remove pieces from the side to divide/maintain size and plant up removed sections. That isn't taking the whole mother plant out of the ground so I assume it must have a extensive root system or it's just the ease of the method?

Carrie, I got some at the Lowe's in Roanoke. I'll be sure to save you some seeds for wintersowing.

I can't wait to see this bloom. Someone's been pinching yours, or is it a clump?

htat is one good looking plant! I have got the teensiest seedlings which may or may not be joe.

It's actually two clumps planted very close together. Token, I haven't done a thing to it. I can't wait to see it bloom too.

Hmmmm. I am thinking maybe the owner of the house planted those two clumps much too close together. I might just have to dig them and separate them before we move, for the good of the plants, of course. So what if maybe a little piece falls off and into a pot......

I bought my plants. I sowed seeds for regular and chocolate. Nada. Zilch. Zero germination. So the purchased plants fill in an area where I ripped out some badly behaving rudbeckia.
