Does this sound like Ash Tree Anthracnose?

Our builder planted Urban Street Ash trees (in 2002) along our street (have never heard of this type ash and searching online showed nothing). We have had a very wet spring and my trees were green, healthy and lush. I now notice many of trees are browning in parts of the leaves and the leaf tip and some blistering on some of the leaves. We had this several years ago and found it was spores from a local drainage area.

Does this sound like anthracnose? If so, can it be managed. My trees face west, so they do get a good amount of sun. They are growing nicely and I would hate to lose these trees and start over. I might add I had these trees checked last year for the borers that have destroyed so many ash trees in Michigan, I beleve. After inspection, the extension center said there was no evidence of the Emerald Ash Borer.

The developer half-*ssed the plan labeling and there is no such tree spp. Nonetheless, from the information provided, it could be anthracnose, which is rarely fatal. It can weaken the tree for additional pathogen infection, and you certainly should prepare yourself for EAB.

The other problem with this tree is a rather large vertical crack starting from the ground and going right up. It's a frost crack - has been there for at least 2 years that I've noticed. From what I read, frost cracks on ash trees don't necessarily kill a tree but do give bugs an opportunity to crawl in there. After Rick's suggestion that it might be another borer, which I hadn't considered, I read about the Redheaded Ash Borer and the Banded Ash Clearwing Borer, native pests that attack ash trees. I'm quite certain there's something buggish in that tree, based on the woodpecker activity which is almost constant. I'm also thinking this tree is a goner - perhaps not from EAB but something else, slowly but surely. I'll still check it closely - I got some plants from southern Ontario a couple of years - is it possible for EAB to have travelled that way? Those plants are now planted right near that ash tree but that's got to be a stretch, no? Having to remove the tree will affect some plants that now benefit from the midday shade it provides (but they can be easily moved). Having to remove it will mean less ash seeds. Having to remove it give me the opportunity to plant something new there, and that's okay with me.

You're welcome roseunhip! I have chicken wire around alot of my trees, to deter just about everything! I've actually seen woodchuck climb trees! But I think that the mark you're seeing is what they do to mark their territory.......although that is just a guess on my part. We used to have alot of woodchucks, and they never bothered my garden (with it's 3' chickenwire fence), but I've heard from others, that woodchucks can wipe out a garden overnight. Good luck with your tree healing. They are pretty good at doing that.

Regarding Imidacloprid Drench, soil inject, or trunk inject. Large trees must be proactively treated, before EAB causes noticeable damage. And if already showing decline, one must apply god-sent Tree-age product until tree recovers. Imidacloprid product must be applied just after ground unfreezes, which is usually April for us in the Midwest. Since peak uptake is needed between end of May and First of July, because Imidacloprid only kills Adults feeding on leaves, and Borer larvae's first two "Instar" stages. So Imidacloprid must kill off all young stage borers, before they reach damaging 3rd and 4th instar stages which Imidacloprid can not kill. Anyone in fear of killing off Honey bees or Earth worms, which settlers both brought over from Europe in 1700's. Must remove any flowering plants under treated tree that might also uptake drench or soil inject. Another proven option is applying Organic Tree-azin and Aza-sol produced naturally from India's Neem tree. Presently these are only approved products available in Canada. All the above only lasts one year, but Tree-age G4 can be purchased and applied by any common tree owner that lasts two years. If anyone would like to learn how to trunk inject themselves, using assembled parts costing under $2 bucks. Just contact me! Know that ALB Asian Longhorn Beetle had been totally eradicated here in Chicago. Since ALB spreads so slow, compared to EAB. Public should also be aware that 99% of Nursury trees arrive today with root flare already too deep in rootball. And require "Root flare excavation" before dug out of field, or installed on parkway. Also be aware that all young trees require "Formative structural pruning" to retain "Apical dominance" completed every few years until age 15-20. And also understory fruit trees with "modified crowns". Enjoy!

I have a 92 Chevy Caprice Classic that I've been driving for 19 years. I drive it about 8 months out of the year. In winter it's parked under cover, but the rest of the time it's in my driveway or parked under a tree. A month ago I took it to the mechanic to be inspected and have an ABS sensor replaced. It turned to need new brake pads as well. When I drove it home, the climate control was acting strangely. "Vent," which normally brings in air from the outside, now produced air conditioning. And the fan, which is controlled by a separate switch, didn't turn off when I turned off the A/C-Vent-Heat switch. It normally does. Plus an awful smell was coming out of the system. To me it smelled like moldy tobacco. (No one has ever smoked in the car.) So I took it back to the mechanic. He said nothing he did in the previous repair would have impacted the climate control. He looked at it and said debris from the tree had gotten into the area by the windshield wipers and clogged up the A/C drain, and that's what I'd been smelling. He cleaned it out and left the panel off it so that it could dry out. He said he'd put the panel back on in a week. It's past a week now, but I still smell the smell and the other problems haven't changed. Also, the engine sounds like the A/C is on all the time, even when it's turned off. It makes that cycling sound, if you know what mean. That doesn't seem like a good thing. I love this car (I really love this car!), but I'm on a fixed income and don't have much of a budget for car repairs. It's been amazingly free of trouble all these years, but does this repair sound like something that's going to make up for that? Here's my car's "glamour shot." :-)

If I take a picture, can you confirm that it is Anthracnose?? Our area has not been hit with the EAB. Just the thought of having to start over with a small tree is discouraging. This Ash tree is really pretty, heavily leafed, nice branching and lush green color. The extension center had an expert check out our trees knowing they would have to destroy all the ash trees had there been any evidence of the EAB in our neighborhood.

It doesn't matter that you would hate to start over.

Why?

1. The anthracnose likely won't kill the tree.
2. The EAB will. Your wishing that it won't appear in your area won't stop it from doing so. Sorry.

EAB is not widespread in that part of the country but cant Bayer Advanced be used to prevent it?

Bayer Advanced.....maybe, sorta, in a lab if you follow up every year.

I almost bought some for my 3 remaining large white ash last year. Went and did their math based on trunk diameter, think I came up with $187 or so and wanna say I read it was best applied in the spring.

this is nonsense ..

asking for a diagnosis and chemical care via the internet...

contact your local Ag agent... or a qualified Arborist in your county ...

also a call to your local forestry college might gain some USEFUL information ... in regard to the reality of EAB

personally i got rid of all my ash.. as EAB came.. you are delusional if you think it will NEVER get to your ash ... and i removed all mine...because as toronodo points out.. it was going to be hundreds of dollars a year.. for the next century ... the entire life span of the tree ... per tree

i know you dont want to hear this.. but just get rid of them ... you may as well try to change the temperature of the earth.. in trying to save an ash ... UNLESS A PROFESSIONAL INSPECTOR INDICATES OTHERWISE

Certainly Ken has a good point about the Extension Agency.

And if you think EAB won't move around the eastern part of the country, I have a great investment scheme for you...

Why does everyone assume that EAB will swallow up every Ash tree in the country? There's plenty of examples of pests effecting some regions but others not at all. D.E.D is one example out of many. There are many factors that could effect their impact in MD as in MI.

No one here stated 'every ash in the country'. And there are just as many examples of pathogens that have spread throughout the country.

Saaaay...what would you invest if I can guarantee you a minimum 7% annual return...

what i am saying.. is that investing thousands of dollars in fighting a pest that is on the march.. MIGHT NOT BE WISE.. UNLESS MONEY IS NO OBJECT...

ONE THING THAT YOU HAVE TO DEFINE.. IS IF it is A RUST.. OR A RUST COLORED PROBLEM.. IS it THE FIRST PROBLEM .... OR A SECONDARY PROBLEM ...

what caused the damage .. is imperative to know...

as compared to what came after .. to a damaged leaf ..

the prime example would be a hail storm ... damaging all he leaves... and then weeks or months later.. disease and pestilence moving into the previously damaged leaf ... as such.. the secondary problem is transitory .. and treating it.. is not necessary .... and there would be nothing to do about the hail.. in this example ...

the pix i saw ... just had small brown spots all over them... and were out of focus ... and not closeup ...

you really need a local professional opinion ..
