A diesel engine may be harder to start at high altitude because of reduced air density. Glow plugs provide a very good assist for starting a diesel. Interestingly, since modern diesels are almost uniformly turbocharged, high altitude often leaves them in better shape than normally-aspirated gas-engined vehicles at high altitudes. Since the formation of nitrous-oxide increases with temperature and pressure, it becomes one of the problem components in the exhaust when the operation of a diesel engine approaches it maximum torque (lugging). Dropping to lower gear and spinning the engine faster at lower torque reduces, but does not eliminate this polutant. True. There's some discussion now that the introduction of post-combustion treatment (like BLUETEC, etc.) can allow the combustion event to produce more NOx than current restricted values because now it can be cleaned up before it leaves the vehicle. That's what killed the diesel in America. In 1980 GM used a car 350 engine and converted it to diesel. It was a total disaster. The engine wasn't strong enough to handle the conversion. In fairness, IDI diesels in general were smoky and slow. While the 350 conversion was a disaster, it did not explain the marketplace failures of the diesel Chevette, Ford's Topaz/Tempo diesels, diesel Corollas, etc., none of which used poorly-converted gasoline engines. And the new diesels are every bit as quiet as a gasoline engine. No longer can you hear a diesel 300 yards away. Well, the diesel passenger cars are. Diesel pickups and SUVs are still quite loud for reasons that I think have more to do with gaining attention than converts. Something macho about driving a vehicle that sounds like a dump truck, I guess.

And everyone pays pretty much the same in road taxes whether they're pounding the roads with a three-ton-plus Lincoln Navigator or a one-ton Nissan Sentra. Everyone's insurance has gone up because of increased damage claims made by people in cars who've been hit by a truck or people who don't know how to drive trucks to begin with. There's nothing proportional about that................... Our government has really fumbled the ball here, and after so many years has yet to rectify this situation. I suspect they are trying to protect the remnants of the American auto industry.. I believe we should be far more united with Europe in protecting the environment - that their approach is more balanced and fair.. We have a government that responds too easily to the pressure groups rather than the people in general. The environmentalists and their supporters are probably the single strongest pressure group in Washington and many state capitols as well. I feel that national interests are more important; that we must no longer continue to be dependent on Islamic oil.. One of the solutions to this problem is the Diesel and a much higher standard for fuel economy...

I just hope they are the new clean burning diesels. Because if they' aren't they won't be allowed in CA, NY, MA, ME, and VT. I would buy a diesel tomorrow if they were allowed here. So I'm hoping for good news. But the Supremes have decided the EPA can regulate emissions and not need Congress, so the whole future is now in limbo. I had a Bunny 26 years ago that got an honest 50 MPG. No gimmicks, no electric motors, no batteries. Just 50 MPG.
