I'm a guy that likes a little art in my garden. Not something outlandish or that takes away from the trees and plants, but gives the eye something to see when traveling across my garden. That was why I asked about the stump centering. If they are 18-24" across that's a pretty good sized mounting platform and also fairly similar in size. And if they are in fact straight in a line as the picture shows and fairly equidistant apart I would suggest leveling the tops of the stumps to one general height if they vary much and then use them as platforms for some kind of art display with plantings in between. You could maybe put something metal birds on them as one idea. I had some utility tombstones I needed to cover up on my property so I covered them in cedar boxes I built and then got a set of herons in various patina metallic finishes and in various poses and mounted them in combinations on top of the boxes. They looked much better than the utility tombstones and the rusting metal is very organic. Another possibility would be to do a tall metal shape coming out of the top of each stump like maybe a piece of bent iron work in a celtic design that all match or are in combinations of similar designs and sizes. I love old rusted iron work in a garden. It gives it a very natural feel while adding eye candy to the display. As I said art doesn't have to be some slap you in the face thing like a bright colored object that makes you see it and not the garden......it can be very esthetically and natural pleasing and actually enhance your garden's look and appeal. Then you could maybe put some nice columnar shaped or smaller trees or shrubs between them. Maybe show off a series of similar and connected varietals. One idea might be a series of the smaller and pretty redbuds for instance. There are some great new variegated ( Silver Cloud and Floating Clouds )and colorful leafed varieties ( Rising Sun - my new favorite ) now that stay fairly small or maybe a narrow/weeping form ( Ruby Falls ). Most of these redbuds are good to zone 6 and most to zone 5. And redbus will give you that real burst of spring color in the garden. Just one idea. mark

there is a plant propogation book i have wherein the author describes his own mist system. that author has a large black coil of hose in the roof of his greenhouse so that water can be heated before reaching the mist nozzles. that's at least one vote for using warm water and keeping the cuttings reasonably warm as they root. just thought i would toss that in! lol. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posted by: mosaic z8 LA (My Page) on Sun, May 11, 03 at 11:59 With such a setup you could probably root roses under mist all winter here in Louisiana. (heh), even though the reason I bought it at the time was to keep a new patch of zoysia sod watered until it rooted in. My batteries did last all season last year, but it was only opening that valve 4x a day for 3 weeks, and then 1x every 4 days for a couple of months. And even though I had a pressure regulator on there, I kept having a problem with the heads blowing off! (Their drippers work perfectly by the way so it's nothing against the company) I ordered foggers from Misty Mate this year and they put out a super fine fog. Perfect for propagation. They are a litte more expensive than the ones from Dripworks but worth it. And if you ask they will ship the misting heads for $1.50. I went to HD and bought a 10-24 tap and drill set (3.00) and drilled holes in my 1/2" cvpvc and the heads just screwed right in! I bought a Melnor timer at HD for $39 and it has 1 minute spray options so I've got it set for 1 minute every 10 minutes. Can't remember the model number but it's not the one on the HD website. I hope to finish my new propagation box soon. I built one on a stand this year so I can move it around easily. Wouldn't you know, HD has plastic sheeting made just for greenhouses that I used! It's not the real thick heavy stuff either. It's only 4mil and is crystal clear see-thru! Hopefully I'll be finished this week!

I should've said that drying acorns is not an exact science. Over drying and they will lose their viability. Whether they are float tested and/or sunk for 24 hours to remove weevils... place them on drying racks or cardboard until they are surface dried and then place them in ziplock bags and put them into your refrigerator. If heavy condensation develops inside the ziplock bag, remove them and dry them a day at a time and return them to your refrigerator. Only until the inside of the ziplock bag shows mist-sized droplets of 1/4 to 1/3 of the bag are they ready. Any large water droplets and you must dry them more. My above statement of two weeks is what I have done in the past and I still had far too much condensation inside my bags. You would be much safer to go thru the process a day or two days at a time until optimal condensation is achieved. All the best, Dax

HelpMeFind is really useful, but only if the rose has been listed there under the name it's been sold under; sometimes with older, out of patent roses the wholesaler will stick an unregistered name on known varieties to sell them. These tend to be 'body bag' roses, or the cheaper plants at big box stores. https://www.helpmefind.com/rose/plants.php Most have a patent date on them, if they are patented (some antiques obviously aren't and never were). I want to say it's 20 years from when issued before the patent expires, but others could say for certain.
