Are the Aspen Dead?

youth4him

I recently transplanted 5 relatively mature aspen (quaking) from one part of my property to the other. They needed to be moved, so I wasn't terribly worried if they didn't make it. They are all 1-2" trunk size.

The day after they were all transplanted and staked, a huge dry wind came and blew for about 12 hours or more, which I think sucked the moisture out of the trees, and with the transplant shock, they didn't have the root system to weather the storm.

All of the leaves on all of them are now dried and falling off, despite adequate water at the roots.

I'm wondering if they are dead now, and will come back either this season or next? Aspen are cheap here, so I hate to wait until next spring to find out they are dead.

Any help?

Here is a pic I just took this morning of 3 of the trees in a grouping.
