Moving to new house and trying to take favorites...

Ok, so we've decided to move back to the Atlanta area which will be a little cooler than where I am now...7b on some charts and 8 on others. We are in middle ga and I usually have things blooming until Dec or so. I have a collection of plants I planted for my hummers and I need help with how to move a few...

Bee balm- petite delight, jacob's kline, and rasp. wine, coneflower, cardinal flower, black eyed susan, and hostas. I found the hosta forum but I need help with the others. I will not be moving from one house to another imm so I was thinking that potting them in the mean time might be good. I had a flood last year that nearly wiped me out and potted a bunch then replanted in fall/winter. I lost 2 or 3 bee balms so i was wondering if its better to plant them at my mom's for now and get them next spring or if I can keep them in pots until we get to the new place....hopefully by Oct. we will be there.

when i moved .. i moved about 1500 pots... WHAT A PAIN IN THE BEHIND ...

if mom's is an option... i would do it there ... gives you so much flexibility ... and little or no aftercare ... other than asking her to give them some water once in a while ...

My two cent cut-and-pasted reply to a previous post regarding my own experience taking plants when moving:

Regarding taking the plants, been there, done that, would do it again but only in limited form. Next time I move I'm only taking plants that are hard to replace, either because difficult to find and/or very expensive to replace (e.g. I have a couple beautiful mature laceleaf Japanese maples and a stunning mature tree peony that would cost a fortune to replace, if I could even find one that big for sale), and plants that have sentimental value. Other than that - it stays.

Reason I say this is because last time I moved I took all I could - I dug up pretty much all of my perennial beds and rose bushes. Guess what? Off the top of my head, besides a laceleaf Japanese maple and one peony that I took with me, I can't think of any plant that moved with me that is in my garden at the current time. There are various reasons, but the two main reasons are soil and light conditions different than what the plants required - a general statement of failure to thrive, if you will - and the plants didn't fit into what I was trying to create at this place.

And oh the guilt I initially had when I had to trash a lot of plants after a year or so of keeping them in temporary locations, realizing they just wouldn't work. I found homes for some of them, but tossed the bulk. (I've since gotten over the guilt of shovel pruning over the years....)

Plus, it was a lot of hassle, and there is an expense. Don't forget pots and potting soil cost money, even those 99 cent plastic pots add up. The headache comes in when you have to actually do something with all those plants. I kept all the pots of stuff in a temporary holding area, but what a pain to have to keep with the watering, not to mention it was so messy with stuff all over the place, and the stress of knowing I had to do something with all those plants grated at me.

Of course, if you move to a place where there are nice beds mapped out or you have a vision right off the bat of what you'd like to create, that would make thing easier, but realistically how often does that happen?

So, my advice is take what is valuable or sentimental and leave the rest. View it is an opportunity to start fresh, to create something beautiful and unique that relates to this new chapter in your life.

Traditionally, before the technology of refrigerating them was developed, most new roses were planted as bare-roots in the late fall. Transplanting roses as bare-roots is much the easiest way to do it. In your zone, there is a risk that a warm December could cause roses to grow out, freeze back, and deplete the plants or even kill some of them. However, that's the way I'd do it, as opposed to the expense and labor of potting. Just dig them with 12" roots and canes, strip all leaves, label them and bag them. Store in the shade until you can plant. They should keep well at temperatures mostly between 25 and 40 degrees Remove any growth buds that break before spring. After planting, spray the canes with dormant-strength Wilt Pruf.

food_lover, I tried dehydrating kale for "kale chips", but no one in the family liked them, so I gave them a "whiz" in the food processor and made powder, which I added to meatballs. It worked well with kale, so I believe it will work with bok choi. It might even make a good addition for those who like "green" smoothies... The hot asparagus? I used this recipe and just halved fresh peppers and added a couple to each jar. I used habaneros because my husband likes stuff really hot, but milder varieties would work just as well, depending on preference and availability. The recipe came from the Ball Blue Book, available at their on-line site: https://www.freshpreserving.com/blog/pickled-asparagus I just used fresh chilies instead of the dried peppers called for in the recipe. I learn so much non-rose stuff from this forum. Take turtle brumation. I first heard about this from Moses. I must have been asleep in school. We were not guided by exams set by Cambridge. when i moved i had girlfriends (gardener girlfriends) come with shovels. they all took plants back to their gardens and squeezed them in. after i moved and got the beds dug the following year I went and collected them back. that way plants were divided and everyone got something they wanted. my 5 yearold tree peony was put in the sales contract since i moved in the summer and it couldnt be transplanted until the fall.

I'd plant em at Moms. Much simpler in the long run. I "stored" my brother's garden for him when he sold his house. When he had his new garden prepped, he came and got starts of everything, I ended up with starts of everything, and the plants were happy as could be.
