how good a bloomer is Westerland supposed to be?

I planted a Westerland last spring and it grew so vigorously I couldn't believe it. The foliage is really beautiful and healthy, but it hardly had any blooms after the first ones that were on it when I bought it were over. This spring it took off again. When it set buds it was only one per stem, and the resulting display was pretty disappointing compared to other roses (shrubs and florabundas) I've grown. It's a big thorny monster and not worth the trouble to me if it doesn't bloom well and repeat. Will things improve as it matures? I did notice that one cane came up in the back with multiple buds.

I don't have one (but now I want one :o)
My Heirloom Old Garden Rose catalog says:
"always blooming"
"repeat blooming"
"hardy to zones 4-5"
My High Country Roses catalog says:
" Zone 5 rr ff" (good repeat/nice fragrance)

I can only tell you about mine in my garden. It had a good flush and is now blooming again. I LOVE this one.

Good advice. Yes, plant the bud union down 4" below the soil line and you shoud be just fine. I've grown Westerland for about 7 years now planted deep and it does great. It isn't very cane hardy at all here, but it does have such outstanding vigour that by the end of the season it is 6'+ and covered in blooms during its 3 main flushes. Harry, That is a beautiful picture. I remember when you were planning this for your garden and I also recall expressing my doubts that it would be cane hardy enough for you even in zone 6. You were most obviously right that you have some wonderful microclimate effect going on in your yard. I'm happy to see that it was all you envisioned! However, all that said, no way is Westerland cane hardy in Quebec in even the mildest winters here.

What clem with Westerland orange rose?

I like the idea of Betty Corning, but I'm just afraid she'll overwhelm the Westerland Rose. It would be a nice contrast and a different look, as all my other clems are large flowered. I'll check on Perle d'Azur. I did go down to my local nursery to see if they had either BC or EV but nada. So, I'll have to order from online. Thanks all for the recommendations! I've got some great ideas to think about. I'm tired of loser clems that are in their 4th year and still sleeping! I have a lot of trellis to cover for the privacy screen I'm trying to create and losers don't accomplish what I'm trying to do lol!

Oops, I moved the lily picture. Sorry about that. Thanks for your kind remarks everyone! funny how the Treasures & Francois Verhaert all bloomed the same day, & have sort of the same look. I really like them, not sure just which one I like best. Probably Pandora's Treasure just because of the name :) I haven't really measured the seedling Debra, at least 40" & I think taller. Val, I just grow for my own pleasure so I don't track exact crosses, just try for pod parent. Can't keep up with tags well either, but the closest tag says from Wisest of Wizards & that seems likely. Thanks Cindy, I like those eyes too :)

Mine rests longer between flushes than many of my other roses, but then it blooms well, so I get about 3 flushes a summer..others I can get 4. A large well developed bush shouldn't have 1 bloom per stem on it. Is it a new own root perhaps? I am thinking it may be growing roots instead of putting out blooms? If it is own root, give it 3 or 4 years, then decide.Good Luck...Donna

Mine blooms constantly but I have it growing horizontally which makes a big difference with this rose...

decobug, do you have pics of your horizontal westerland. or Zepie, too, if you have that one? I have heard horizontal training does wonders for some plants, but am unsure how to accomplish that.

Ellen, give your plant some more time. I grew this in Texas and it rebloomed very well for me, but yes the majority of the bloom was at the ends of the canes. For me, the wonderful fragrance and vivid color made the space it took worthwhile. I've seen pics of this rose on a trellis but as you know, it's very thorny and canes are stiff. If you put it on a support you'll need to be quick to start training the canes before they harden up!
