malvas stopped blooming

I planted malva alcea "Zebrina" for the first time this spring. They grew quickly and the blooms were incredible. Anything I've read about this plant says it blooms like crazy well into fall. But now, all at once, they've stopped blooming (three plants). Do these guys take a break and then rebloom? I'll be disappointed if they don't come back because they are beautiful plants.

Too much water?

They will take a bit of a break periodically, but usually have a few blooms here and there.

I grow these every year as annuals. They don't overwinter for me. They like cool weather so I plant them around May 15, early for me. Once it gets hot and humid, they pretty much stop blooming. I have cut them back and I've tried leaving them alone. I continue to get a few flowers but, really, heat and humidity are the end of them. So yours are doing the same as mine.

Why do you need to dig and store them? Unlike other types of bulbs, lilies never go fully dormant and they do not store well. In fact, they can deteriorate rather rapidly out of the ground unless you can offer the same sort of temperature controlled conditions the wholesale growers do. Generally lifting and storing/prechilling lilies is not a requirement anywhere in th US but only in very tropical areas (Lahore, Hawaii, etc.) It is a far better practice to just leave them in place, stems and foliage intact, to mature and ripen naturally. Leaving them in place also allows the bulbs to naturalize or produce offsets, increasing the number of bulbs and flowers over time.

You can plant your vine anywhere that receives some afternoon shade.....an east facing aspect is good. And even if the vine got more afternoon sun, it should still flourish and bloom.....it is just the colors will be less intense and the center bar less defined. But the vine will grow perfectly well in full sun also. Clems do take some time to establish before they really take off. So take the time to create a good, well amended planting hole, plant the vine deeply (4-6 inches deeper than in the pot) and provide plenty of water the first season. And then be patient for the first 3 years or so :-)) It will grow and you will get flowers but it won't be until somewhere in the 3rd to 5th year that the vine will really come into its own!!

Yeah, they're wedged in there pretty good. I love those pots that they're in, but not as much as I love my adeniums. Oh well, I'll know better next time. I didn't expect them to get that big; at least not yet. I figured that they would be fine for at least one season's growth. I had to bring them in last night because it got down into the low 40's. Gotta love Arkansas' sporadic weather. Just the other day it was 85°F, and this morning I finally had to turn on my heat for the first time to take the chill out of the air, haha.

It's a good idea to "deadhead" your daylilies. Remove the spent flowers ASAP (the next day after blooming) to prevent seed pods from forming. I use my thumb nails to cut through the spent flowers at the base, making sure to remove the ovary. If you do get seed pods they break off easily. I do this for two reasons: (1) to prevent seed pods from forming and (2) because spent flowers are unsightly. I have a small collection in comparison to most folks who frequent this forum, and in mid-season this can take a bit of time. So I'm curious as to how those with thousands of plants manage this.

Mine have bloomed wonderfully, but have now set seed.
Now I will cut them back to the ground.
If the weather cooperates they will bloom again soon.

Mine bloomed early spring, I cut them back by half, they bloomed again (and still are blooming), but the Jap Beetles are all over them. I am hoping for a third bloom! (I can dream, can't I?)

I have Malva sylvestris and it's busy making seeds now, so I've been meaning to cut it back (partly because I want a rebloom and partly because I don't want the million seedlings it produced last year). I haven't cut it back yet, but after a week of no blooms, I noticed some of them are starting to bloom again even without cutting back. But from my experience last year, it will be a much sparser bloom this time, so I still intend to cut them back. Just need to get to it!
