What's wrong with my dwarf weeping willow?
Comments (4)it looks like it was grafted where the green trunk changes to the brown weeping part ... that means what is sprouting below is not a weeping variety... in most cases ... otherwise.. why graft up top ... first.. do a scratch test down near the sprouts.. between the wood and the bark you will see a green layer.. this is the cambian layer .... lets say the blood vessels of the tree ... water goes up.. food goes down ... then take one of the weeping branches.. and do a small scratch test... if no green.. its dead .... if there is green.. there is a small chance it will recover .. frankly .. and i am sure you don't want to here it.. the odds are low ... if you got it from bigboxstore... find the receipt and return it .. and get a replacement in fall .. i personally wouldn't buy stock that has been on the blacktop since may ... but most stores bring in fresh stock in the fall ... being on both the sprinkler and a drip line.. perhaps you drowned the thing... willow generally like water.. but the roots do need air ... any chance this is all complicated by clay soil??? did you amend the planting hole??? ken...See MoreThoughts on golden curls weeping willow....
Comments (3)praksta, My experience with the run-of-the-mill 'corkscrew' willow is as bboy recommended - much better if you whack it back to the ground every year and let it come back as multiple vigorous contorted stems. I have a couple in a wet spot that I've let go for about 10 years, and they have large dead areas throughout the crown. Look about like any other ugly old diseased, dying streambank willow, from a distance. If you coppice, all you'll need is a good pair of loppers - 1-yr stems wont be THAT big....See MoreCarrie Report: Weeping Willow Falls
Comments (3)I was very fortunate that it did very little damage, fell away from the house and only one trunk was resting against the roof, and it did no damage to the house. I will watch the perennials that are in that side of this bed to see if any of them will require moving. I haven't been able to get my helper in that bed since this incident because it has been too wet, and we will be getting more rain the remainder of this week.....................so hopefully, the creeping jenny won't be too bad by the time we can get in it. Thanks, Marti, it will get better as the season progresses. I love this bed as it is the first thing I see when I look out the window when I am at the computer....See MoreSick Weeping Willow tree - please help
Comments (2)use the PHOTO button below where you type ... and load them directly from your hard drive ... we need to know if this is a 100 foot willow... or a bush type ... but basically.. it sounds like the trunk is rotting from the inside out .... and it has to go ... on on site inspection by a certified arborist is highly recommended... and that is not any monkey with a chainsaw ... if its overhanging your house.. or anything of value.. you can probably just deal with the insured monkey with the chainsaw ... really.. really need a pic .. to be any more specific ... ken...See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
