Silver Maple 2 diam limb removed: what to do now?

A silver maple of ~4Â diameter just behind my garage was damaged in the storms over the weekend. A limb ~2Â in diameter developed an ~8Â long split. My father, uncle, and I removed all but ~1Â of the limb. I understand silver maples are prone to rot from large wounds, but I would like to do what I can to prevent this wound from leading to extensive trunk rot. My uncle is going to come back out to make the final cut. As I now understand the final cut needs to be made just outside the collar and branch-bark ridge. Is this correct? Once the final cut has been made, what if anything can I do to guard against rot? Would regular applications of liquid copper fungicide be helpful? Thank you in advance for the help.
