Roots from Tulip Poplar or Leptospermum?

I'm having two Leptospermums taken out of my yard. They are well established, over 15 feet high but have become a problem for the area because they were never properly pruned or maintained. Very close to them is a 20-year-old tulip poplar on the other side of my sound wall on city property. In the grass surrounding this area, I've got a couple large surface roots--the twist your ankle kind. I'm wondering how I can find out if these roots are from the leptospermums or the tulip poplar. If they're from the leptospermums, I'm inclined to have my tree guy drill them out when he removes the shrubs so I can more easily plant in the area (I'm converting lawn to perennial beds). However, if they're from the tulip poplar, I don't want to damage them and potentially damage the tree.

Any ideas how I can figure out where these roots are coming from?
