Tying all this together for third graders: Need help

I am a third grade teacher. For the past few years, I have done worm composting with my students. They have enjoyed it, but I have always felt that I didn't bring enough "teaching" into the project, as we really only set it up and forgot about it aside from adding new vegetables.

This year, I want to do two things:

1) start a new worm bin

2) create a lasagna garden

The goal would be to create a unit of study that truly teaches kids about the process while giving them a hands-on experience. Here are my questions:

1) Do you know of any curriculum out there for this age group?

2) Do you know of any books - particularly picture books - that would be accessible to this age group? (I recall one titled A Log's Life, which might be good)

3) Any special lessons or other things that I should point out?

Thank you so much for your help. I have been very inspired by this forum!
