Are Papa Meilland, Chrysler Imperial or Illusion low spray?

or William Shakespeare 2000?

I need something red and fragrant, substance would be nice, too. I am totally willing to give up some fragrance for disease resistance. I'd rather have a floribunda, but will consider other forms as well. Failing red, I'll take suggestions for another color. Mother of Pearl, Prairie Sunrise, and Magnificent Perfume are possibilities. I did grow Double Delight, Fragrant Cloud and Red Fountain, but they, um, expired after a few years.

For comparison, this past weekend I saw Curly Pink, a Brownell rose, at Hartwood Roses near Fredericksburg, Va. (I'm going to buy it this spring.) She had plenty of blooms and fragrance and some blackspot. That's what I'm going for, but RED.

I did a search on "disease resistant" on the Roses Forum and sadly realize that no fragrant red roses met the "no-spray" qualification. So, I'm looking for the next best one to kill, er, grow.

Definitely NOT Chrysler Imperial. It is a mid 20th century HT, and like all of its ilk, is a disease magnet. I have one only because my husband's grandfather planted it in our garden, and I am thinking of SPing it because I can't stand the way it looks, although the fragrance is lovely.

Veterans Honor (ht)
beautiful, but new so I cannot comment personally - supposed to be disease resistent

Chrysler Imperial (ht)
appears disease resistant only in dry heat, although awesome scent

Crimson Glory (ht)
you'd need to check your area - great for me in mine, another awesome scent, more bush like than other ht's

Europeana (floribunda)
lots of continuous blooms, lots of powdery mildew, no scent

Oklahoma (ht)
new this year, amazing scent but slow starter for me and blooms blow fast

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that Chrysler and its' three offspring are all weak. In Connecticut only Mister Lincoln thrived for me but t is a sparse bloomer and just gets too big.. Chrysler is the most fragrant but also the weakest. Here in SoCal that is not a problem but in CT it always went into decline and after three years or so it wasn't worth keeping. Oklahoma is a prolific bloomer but the blooms are cupped and smallish and the plant is short as well. Papa Meilland is the most like Chrysler but if you are going to use it you might as well take Chrysler which is really the best of them all. My Chrysler here is prolific and the blooms are gorgeous and wonderfully fragrant. But it s weak and I would be curious to know if anyone here in Z6 or below has had success with it.

In no spray gardens east of San Francisco, california where the soil is heavy clay, and the conditions favor p.m. over blackspot during most of the green season. -until June or Autumn, when rain or watering the foliage will bring on blackspot. Rust is rare here. I ignore light coverings of p.m. and get rid of any rose that defoliates from disease, those roses included: Lundy Lane yellow' Ducher' the worst rose for p.m. it defoliated more than 90% of its leaves which of course stopped it from bloomming. Borderline, moderate p.m. during wet months but never defoliates 'Mutabilis' The best: China Fabvier' very healthy, floriferous and a bright color. Le Vesuve' such a gorgeous plant. Old Garden Tea roses, and Tea-Noisettes; white: Westside Road Cream Tea' as fragrant as Ducher but far more resistant to powdery mildew. Clean most of the year, here. Lamarque Mme. Alfred Carriere ( best in full sun, small plants are borderline for p.m. in cool wet months) Reve d' Or Crepescule Marachal Niel' ( borderline when a baby, but has good disease resistance now) Marie Van Houtte Mrs. Dudley Cross Duchess de Brabant (borderline for p.m. as a young plant, now that she is older, still gets some p.m. but never defoliates from it) Souveinir de Pierre Notting (not my favorite yellow Tea, as it forms an ugly brown rufff before the petals fall off a bloom) Etoille de Lyon ( a great beauty in my op.) Mrs. B.R. Cant ( one of the fastest growing Teas I've ever grown along with- Monsieur Tillier' Mme. Berkeley (very healthy here, and one of the 3 most beautiful Tea roses I think) Maman Cochet and the white sport Lady Hillingdon (some p.m. easy to ignore with that great vast wealth of apricot bloom.) Paul Nabonnanad Tea roses I'd avoid here, these defoliated from disease or were thickly covered with p.m. most of the year. Alliance Franco Russe ( covered with a thick coat of p.m. as a young plant, if you live where conditions are hotter this is a gorgeous Tea. ) Georgetown Tea (p,m. on all leaves, thickly. H.P.s Reine des Violettes Comtesse de Chabrillant' such a pretty H.P. Arrilagga ( I love this rose, a big buxom beauty, light pm easy to overlook) Glendora (some b.s. not enough to be a concern) It does shattter rapidly in hot weather but has plenty of side buds which makes this a non-issue on the plant, but not a long lasting vase flower) Grandmothers Hat (is this a perfect pink H.P.? or what? fragrance, disease resistance and a long bloom season with quick re-bloom for its' class. --- Polyantha Mlle. Cecille Brunner and all her sports. Borderor Leonie Lamesch Marie Pavie katherine Zeimet and her offspring 'Popcorn' perle d'Or Musk roses R. moschata Temple Musk both have clean foliage most of the year. I cannot detect any fragrance off Temple Musk, which I think is odd as I find R. moschata to be very fragrant. Hybrid Musk Callisto such a pretty yellow rose and very fragrant too! Cornelia my favorite pink H.M. very fragrant as well. Lavender Freindship Queen of the Musks' fat red stained rosebuds stand out against the open creamy white rose blossoms. a wowser of a rosebush, gets huge here, 7' tall x 6' wide, a good rose for a tall hedge. I have both VH and CI and if I had to pick one, it would be VH hands down. I have (2) VH's, one in the ground and one in a container. They both produce a ton of blooms and both have a fruity scent, while not overwhelming, definately noticeable. Compared to CI, the VH blooms have better form, and last much longer. The blooms on my CI tend to 'purple' after a few days while the VH holds it's brilliant red much longer. I also planted a FireFighter last fall, but it hasn't bloomed for me yet. The VH's are also the most vigorous of the three so far this spring. My VH's are already producing buds, but the CI and FF are still waking up. I added the FF after hearing it was very similar to VH in bloom form, but with a stronger scent. Hope to be able to confirm that this summer. Here is a pic of my container grown VH from last summer.

JBCarr, I could not agree with you more about monoculture and especially with roses. I'm learning more about gardening than about roses although they will always be my first love. They shine much more when planted amoung other plants rather than with other roses. As I change my gardening habits, I'm keeping this in mind and replacing these monocultures with different shrubs. Just my opinion on gardening, no judgment call. I'm reminded of the story of Mrs. Wilmont's Ghost. Seems Mrs. Ellen (?) Wilmont, a gardener of some repute, was asked by many to come evaluate their gardens. Her assessment was almost always, not enough contrast, not enough diversity. A few weeks after her visit, the gardener noticed a number of sea hollies (a course looking, prickly perennial) sprouting in the bare spots in their garden. Mrs. Wilmont often carried seeds of this plant in her pocket to "help with the contrast and diversity." Len511, I wish my Felicia was doing well. She is bare caned; not pretty at all. Good luck! I hope yours continues to do well. And my Felicia is prone to sending up those long canes, but is too broad to be a climber. Jeri, I suspect weather is the greatest most uncontrollable factor in any garden. We've had years with drought but this year we've had above average rainfall, except for a dry August. Now, with all the hurricanes, our weather has turned wet again. Still, there is very little mildew compared to the last two years. I think most of the roses are going through "withdrawal" from chemical dependency. Some I know will never recover. I can only wait and see. Barbara

Chrysler Imperial is a pretty tough rose. There's a planting here in a public space that gets no care beyond annual pruning, and it's around 20 years old. Originally there were mass plantings of about 10 different HTs and floribundas (standard older ones such as Peace). They all died out except C.I. Maybe 18 of 20 C.I. plants have survived. It is slightly more resistant to blackspot than the average HT and slightly hardier. Our disease pressure here is similar to what you have in northern Virginia.

Vet's Honor and Liebeszauber are also considered above average, but I haven't grown them. Traviata may be the most resistant HT, but it has no fragrance. All these will get considerable BS where you are.

The climber/large shrub Quadra is probably the most blackspot-resistant red rose. Home Run, a bright red similar to Knock Out, has had some good reviews.

I don't know about growing anything in your region, but Chrysler Imperial grows fine here in Zone 6 Kansas. I think I may have sprayed it twice this year so far, and with the heat coming, I don't anticipate needing to spray it again until sometime in the cooler autumn--and maybe, or maybe not then. My only complaint about Chrysler Imperial is that the blooms aren't as long-lasting as I'd like--but they sure are beautiful.

The red floribunda I always recommend is Eutin--big clusters of showy red blooms, kinda like a hybrid musk blooms. It is very disease-resistant.

The only one of your three that I grow is Illusion. I tolerate a lot of blackspot, but I don't think I've ever noticed any on her to even tolerate. No fragrance, which is a pity, but her blooms are gorgeous with a shine that I've never seen on any of my other red roses which tend to be darker and more velvety.

She's very healthy.

I see that Vintage indicates she has "moderate" fragrance and HMF says she has "strong" fragrance, but I'll be hornswoggled if I can discern any at all. Maybe it's just because she's kinda low to the ground and doesn't waft in my face? I dunno, but she definitely doesn't attract me by any noticeable fragrance.

I bought Home Run. So far the little bitty bush has had 3 blooms and no blackspot in the 3 weeks I've had it. Good red color. I'm pleased so far.

Liebeszauber looks promising. I remember other recommendations for it, too.

Eutin. Wow! That'sa lotsa red. Multiple blooms with a light scent and good disease resistance. Maybe I'll have to pick two . . .

I have Oklahoma... I'd say it has reasonable disease resistance. Gets a touch of mildew, but was not touched by black spot at all when a neighboring rose was. It is a beautiful deep red that deepens as the flower ages. Also, to me it smells like baby powder. I'd recommend it.

None of them are diease resistant here (no hybrid teas are). Nor are Oklahoma (I grew it) or Liebeszauber or Europeana.

Home Run is very disease resistant here and in Philadelphia (my brother grows it, and it has to be easy care).

Well, my resolution for next year is to spray fungicide at least every 3 weeks. Pretty, fragrant red roses are my incentive. If I fail in my resolution, I want a rose tough enough to at least survive until the next spring! I just want to avoid the worst bs attracters.

No one has said anything about Papa Meilland. Is the rose that far out of favor? I thought the Meilland company would only name a top rose "Papa Meilland."

Griff's Red is disease resistant, hardy and has moderate fragrance. Tradescant is also healthy here (I don't spray) and is very fragrant. General Jacqueminot is healthy here and very fragrant although old garden roses don't usually repeat that well.

I have Papa Meilland, Illusion, and Oklahoma. Oklahoma and Papa Meilland are children of Chrysler Imperial, and all three of them are in need of spraying here. I did have Chrysler, but it perished in the bad Easter freeze of '07 along with my original Papa Meilland bush. I replaced Papa. I find that Illusion also needs spraying here as well. Papa Meilland does well here under normal conditions.
