Veteran's Honor or Chrysler Imperial?
Comments (14)I have both VH and CI and if I had to pick one, it would be VH hands down. I have (2) VH's, one in the ground and one in a container. They both produce a ton of blooms and both have a fruity scent, while not overwhelming, definately noticeable. Compared to CI, the VH blooms have better form, and last much longer. The blooms on my CI tend to 'purple' after a few days while the VH holds it's brilliant red much longer. I also planted a FireFighter last fall, but it hasn't bloomed for me yet. The VH's are also the most vigorous of the three so far this spring. My VH's are already producing buds, but the CI and FF are still waking up. I added the FF after hearing it was very similar to VH in bloom form, but with a stronger scent. Hope to be able to confirm that this summer. Here is a pic of my container grown VH from last summer....See MoreOklahoma VS Mr Lincoln
Comments (6)These roses have the same parentage and both are wonderfully fragrant HTs. I love both of them and have grown both. Mr. Lincoln is probably more vigorous overall -- stronger plant, better bloomer. Its ARS rating is 8.3 vs 7.0 for Oklahoma -- which gives a general idea of the difference. The bush grows tall and relatively narrow, so keep this in mind when choosing a planting spot. the bloom color is deep red, but without the black velvet shade of Oklahoma. OTOH, I have a sentimental soft spot for Oklahoma with it's black velvet blooms. The blooms are prettier when the weather is cool. The bush doesn't grow as tall as Mr. L. When I lived in Santa Fe, Oklahoma required extra winter protection. The blooms were gorgeous in the northern New Mexico garden....See MoreWould Firefighter be Redundant?
Comments (17)I don't know how Firefighter could POSSIBLY win over my Chrysler Imperial spot in my heart, but he now has the chance to do so, being a stud in my garden, which cracks me up, as there are two studs about 200 feet away - actual horse stallions - the real deal! They'd trample me calling that little bundle of leaves a stud. Ok - I have enough smelly reds to not need any crispy critters in my garden, so maybe I'll axe the only rose on my being cut to nothing wish list, so I - like Campanula, can stop buying any more roses and enjoy what I have. I'm just thinking about the next two weeks or so, and how much mulching I have to do. No, I'm not even looking (or will pretend I didn't) at Velvet Fragrance. Harryshoe - two on your list (plus Firefighter) - Peace and Tiffany are new for me as of fall. I'm glad they are so pleasing to you, I really look forward to them. Heirloom was one of my first year purchases, and has been and remains one of my favorites for color, fragrance, and form....See MoreThe Mr. Lincoln. The most fragrant of all red roses.
Comments (35)So I got my hands on Mister Lincoln this year and it's growing a lot in the all day sun. I have a huge problem with sun scorch on the blooms. They start out fine, but as soon as they start to open up, by the end of the day, they're toast. Mine are in pots on their own roots. Peak temps are about mid 90s with humidity. I've done my best to give them plenty of water, but it still happens. I can see from Cody's pics they don't mind a lot of sun, so I'm not sure what my problem is. Is it because they're so young? Should I move them, or wait for them to mature more?...See Morepersianmd2orchard
