Weigela 'Wine and Roses' or 'Midnight Wine'?
Comments (29)Flowers are wonderfull for both plants but my personal choice is wine and roses. But I must admit its been a learning experience for me . I bought 3 weigela last year 2 red prince and 1 wine and roses. The red prince has and is still flowering their heads off but I stray. The WR flowered some last year but did not releaf nor did it grow and I gave up on it as being dead. Meanwhile this season I found two more larger wine and roses 3gal size. They were not flowering when I bought them but I was sure they would they had not flowered up thru early july. So I go over to a nearby plant farm and talk to head man in the shrubs he said they would not flower this year if they had not by now. So I went for broke I started watering these guys heavy compared to what I had been watering and can you believe it they started lightly flowering even in this heat and drought of this year. So the answer I had been severely under watering these guys in fear of over watering and causing root rot. I had read about this over and over. I should not have been scared as I made sure these guys had great well draining soil. So I had also killed the first plant from last year for the same reason. It is said the first two years they need plenty of water till established and then after that they should be ok. So at least now I have a feel for how much water they need at least in this drought....See MoreWhen to Begin Pruning/Pinching Wine & Roses Weigela Shrubs?
Comments (3)I wouldn't use the pinching method either. Although they flower on new wood, I get better flowering by cutting them back 1/2 way after they flower. That way I have a full blooming shrub late spring then it will look tidy for the rest of the season. Otherwise Weigela get scraggly pretty quick. Just wait another year. You can prune out an outlying vigorous shoots now though....See MoreWeigela Wine & Roses Question
Comments (1)If you prune it now, you will remove the growth that has next summer's flowers. I would wait until after flowering to prune. But, I think you will find that once the shrubs become established and actively growing, the bottom areas of the shrubs will fill in with new growth and foliage without having to prune them this year. Your main concern now, is to water them well into their dormancy period. This will ensure that they will get through the winter in the best shape. Ian...See MoreFirst Hummer & Weigela, Wine & Roses
Comments (10)Sorry it took so long to reply. I looked at my weigelas and they seem to be in a mixture of full sun and partial sun. Once the roots are established, it can be trimmed to shape it up. Or, you can let it wind around. It just goes where it wants. I try to keep mine a little trimmed. The hummers like them but they try others. For example, I have "Abelia, Edward Goucher" (I keep my plant identifiers that come with the plants) that the hummers will vist and land on the branches. I notice that they visit the "Nepeta, Walker's Low" before they come to the feeder (I have an image of it on my blog). They visit the butterfly bushes too. I also bought some small hummer plants--can't remember the names--after the hummers were coming. My goal was to plant a backyard that bloomed from Spring to Fall without thinking of the hummers. By dumb luck, I ended up with a nice mixture of plants that the hummers seem to enjoy too. I think I have one family of hummers. The boss male, any females he is successful with, and the kids. Its usually 3 to 5 hummers and then a couple of pass-throughs. Here is a link that might be useful: Bir Bird, Little Bird...See Morebixa525
