There's some question regarding any chance of RRD infection of new roses caused by portions of old roots remaining in the soil.
My experience has proven this to be a non issue. I've planted new roses immediately after removing an RRD infected one with no problems.
A Jessica Lauren planted after removal of an RRD infected John Cabot is still doing well after three years.
Have you checked up wind of this bush to see if there are any RRD infected bushes that may be the source of your problem?

Hi Karl, Yes, last year I had to remove a double Knockout due to RRD and Huntington is the only so far I have seen with this crazy growth and messed up blooms this year. It had some funny growth in the spring so I cut out the one cane to see if it was just funny spring growth and the rest of the bush bloomed out beautifully until now. The last week or two all those crazy canes were coming out everywhere and now the blooms are ugly so I dug it up today. Thats good to hear so I will probably go pick one of the ladies in waiting and plop her in the ground. Thanks a bunch, Judy

Hi Miss Judy - I've had RRD in one particular bed in the past that gets south winds blowing across the meadow. I've planted in the same hole and watched the new rose carefully and like Karl, the new one is OK. Ugly stuff, RRD! RRD always seems to show up for me around August.

Rose Rosette Disease I believe. I don't know much about it to go into detail but Ann from Tenn I think it is, has a book out on it that shows good examples of it. I'm sure she tells what causes it too.

When I said to check up wind for infected plants, I meant up wind from your garden, not just a plant in your garden. Check neighbor's roses, empty lots, pastures, open fields, drainage ditches, etc. Birds drop multiflora seeds which grow and can be sources of the disease. The airborne mites that spread the disease don't stop at lot lines or roads. They're carried on the breeze until it eddys, hits a wall or other barrier. They then drop onto whatever happens to be there. If you find a diseased bush, remove and destroy it.

Really Karl, the wind blows all kinda ways here. I will check out my sisters roses and see if they have this problem and destroy!! Can't really see myself checking all the pastures over here because we have oodles and oodles of them in my neck of the woods. Big sprawling country land is where I am. So really it sounds as if it could have came from anywhere, even right outta the sky, so I can't blame the nursery my double Knockout came from. Thanks for your help and I will definitely check out my sisters bushes because they don't take their roses as seriously as I do and probably wouldn't recognize they had a problem. I KNOW where the mites come from in my neck of the woods....south from across the meadow where the multiflora and the POISON IVY grows and thrives. Along with snakes...and I'm definitely not going into the thicket.

When the farmer who owns the field mows every 3-4 years, he disturbs the mites and then lookout! RRD breakouts. Yes....he mowed last week...first time in 3 years. I'm resigned to a breakout. Haven't lost any roses in a couple of years, so crossing my fingers.

Hey TJ, I have poison ivy like crazy here and the neighbor mowed his pasture a week or so ago but I already had it showing up on my rose. What the heck, i'm going to blame him anyway!! lol! He mows several times a year depending on how well the grass grows for hay. I wish he would put his cows back over there and let them eat the field down. In one way though glad the cows are gone because they would come chew on all my plants planted along his fence. You just can't win no matter what we do. Now I must go out with soapy water in hand, well not really in my hand but in a cup and get ready to drown some beetles. Never ending drama now is it. grrrr......
