False Blue Indigo not blooming

We planted this a year ago and it grew nicely last summer, but never bloomed. I figured it was because it was the first year. This spring it came right up and has a lot of stems and leaves but no flowers. It's on the east side of our house but not right up to the house. It's only in shade late in the afternoon. Any ideas what I can try to get it to bloom? I know it's probably too late for this year.

Mine didn't bloom until the third year, but now it's better every year. Hopefully yours will bloom next year.

Have to agree with bloom the third year. Last year was the first time, this year was really pretty. Original plant was very small, 3" pot. Seemed happy, got bigger each year. My understanding is they have a LARGE taproot, which needs to get established before they will bloom. They are hard to move, usually die if moved when large, so place them where you want them to stay. Sometimes you just can't hurry them, which makes the flowers your reward!

You can move the Carolina lupine; like most plants, it probably won't grow too much while it's getting acclimated into its new place, but it's not one of those plants that don't like being moved. It may split apart when you move it(mine did) so you may want to have room for two plants in the new place.

I've got to say that I think baptisias are a lot more amenable to transplantation than people give them credit for. When I transplanted mine, I just made sure to get as much of the root as possible. I also transplanted them mid-summer. They came back the following spring. 3 years later...the plant is 4 feet high and at least 5 feet across. Please don't use fertilisers, these are plants that are used to growing in lean soils. You'll do more harm than good, IMO. I guess a bit of humus wouldn't hurt. B. australis is a nitrogen fixing legume and will be much faster to bloom in lean (infertile), well drained (sandy) soil. If you fertilize it it may never bloom. One of those plants that thrives on neglect. Same conditions as Asclepias tuberosa which I think it looks great w/. Very short bloom period in june but I like the foliage (just gotta have something to hide it's bare knees).
