Blue False Indigo / Baptisia australis

I just transplanted several Blue False Indigo plants and am not sure if I should cut them back or not. They were in a big patch, so the leaves are pretty much just at the tops of the stems. If I cut them back partway there will just be stems, so that seems pointless. Should I leave them as is or cut them back to the ground and hope that the roots will establish themselves over fall and winter? They have buds just under the ground, kind of like a peony does. They are three year old plants. Thanks--
