Hot Pink Hardy Geranium

Tell me about your longest blooming, hot pink hardy geranium (perennial in zone 5) for edging my west-facing foundation bed. Showy flowers are a must, fall color a plus! These will mingle with lady's mantle and Purple Emperor sedum. I have pink KO roses and Goldflame spirea, need something in the magenta color range, NOT purple or pastel pink. I now have Firewitch dianthus, but dislike the blue foliage, combined with the other plants here.

I have other shrubs, inc purple Summerwine ninebark, inkberry hollies, a Ruby Spice summersweet and a sweetshrub, along with a new Prairie Fire crab apple tree. When the crab gets bigger, I plan to add August Moon hosta, bergenia and Japanese forest grass in its shade. I have a big boulder there now.

Are you looking for a short geranium? I have Anne Folkard a sprawler a vivid magenta with a black eye, blooms for a long time, striking.

Sprawling is fine, short or tall, the tougher the better.

Hmmm, she does look striking, chartreuse foliage to boot. Thanks for the lead!

I have sad news about the Russian sage--I waited until tonight to dig them. They were each several inches away from the mother plant so I thought that they were seedlings. When I dug them they came out and it looked like they were actually sent out from the main plant. the one really had no roots and the other one had a few hairy type roots. I potted it up and it will probably get some good roots in a few weeks, but right now it looks really sad and droopy. I wouldn't feel good about trading it, so Signet, your Minnie Klopping hosta and Bev, your achillea cassis will have to either stay home or you can look to see if there is anything else that you would take for them. Please let me know if you see anything. I am sorry about this! :( gg

Thanks for the info. I went to the site ChlorophyllJill noted. That writer doesn't see spreading as a problem - to each his own! I enjoyed your picture Leo - the 3 colours of flowers look wonderful against all that green. I think I will dig up the pinks and stick with the white and the blue for now. I have found a lot of babies between the stones in my walkway. I have a hard time throwing plants out but I think it's the best thing to do. I stuck one pink in a pot - a friend has no garden, only a deck and we're going to see if it survives for her over the summer in a pot on her deck. Thanks again. cnid

A cautionary tale about Wargrave's Pink: The color is beautiful, clear pink but the foliage does not withstand the summer heat and turns brown in mid summer - it will perk up again if you cut it down but did not reflower for me as my Brookside did in the fall. Also, my plants apparently did not survive the winter - no signs of life at this point, and they were at least a little bit mulched.

I was going to mention Ann Folkard, too. She is a sprawler, but not very floriferous in my garden. But she is a long bloomer and weaves around. I enjoy her. I have other geranium sanguineum (I believe these are the 'bloody cranesbill of mangenta color) but they bloom very heavily in mid spring for two weeks or so, and are pretty much done for the season.
I recently read 'endorsement', undoubtably by hybridizer or seller of a 'better' successor to Anne Folkard. If anyone can find it, please post it somewhere so I can read it againl I'm going to try to google it under "better than Anne Folkard"

google Anne and you'll find lots of info, as well as info on other magenta geraniums. You may know there is a geranium forum here, as well.

Geranium sanguineum 'Max Frei' is in 47th day of bloom (started May 20th) and still going.
Planted in part-sun. Its siblings planted in full sun and in part-shade were done about a week ago.

I believe the "competitor" with Ann Folkard is called Anne Thompson. You can see a picture of it on plantdelights.com. I have been wanting it, but haven't gotten a big enough order together yet to order.

I have "Alan Bloom" at the front of my border and it is awesome. Blooms May through June and then reblooms after being cut back.

I have had Anne Thompson for about four years and I love it. It blooms from spring through October and in our mild winters has been evergreen--so far. It has smaller blooms than Folkard and is a nice mounding shape. Its leaves are less chartreuse than Folkard, and the blooms are prolific. It is a great plant!! I got it at a local farmers' market, but I see it from time to time in some of our better local nurseries. Definitely worth getting!

I had Anne Thompson and loved it, but it didn't overwinter well. It came back as tiny and eventually disappeared.

I have seen Max Frei locally, maybe I'll just get a few and try them. Has anyone here tried Tiny Monster? It sounds like I should stick to G. sanguineum for sure, I have G.s. Lancastriense and it has survived for several years, with countless moves. I think it's finally in the right place for it now.
