African Violets

starting over need leaves or plantlets to buy

Anyone who can help? Don't necessarily need named ones...but boy do I have the urge. Weather is great here right now in Phoenix, so need to get them before the heat hits!

Take a look at Jack's Violets on e-bay.

Also, Lyndon Lyon and Bloomlovers.

Jo's African Violets is in Texas (never ordered but heard they were all right).

I believe Travis is shipping (GA)

For no-names, I get Optimaras at Lowe's. I think they are ramping up production of Tennessee II because I got that one and it's very nice.

Ok, I paid the extra postage ($2) and I waited for the mail man so did receive the box today- I was a little disappointed a lot of them were rotted... Frosted denim (rotted- I put it in, but put in several, 5 or more?) Christening gown (1 really tiny leaf rotted) Okie Grape festival (rotted- I put it in, again put in a few?) Glas, I saved quite a bit of seed. In fact, most of my canna were started from seed last year. I thought I'd germinate more this year, but I won't have any room for them if I do. If you'd like I can send you some seed for postage. Garrett.

I am a bit like yourself glaswegian Not always on the garden web forum but like to keep in touch some I remember seeing you on the Brugmansia Forum. To bad you could not bring plants from your garden I was fortunate on the occasion of my last move that I was able to bring quite a bit along But I found as well, that the plant sales of different horticultural groups and various fundraising plant sales found me with lots of inexpensive basic plants. Kind of nice isn't it to have a blank canvas. With your expertise in no time at all you will have marvellous gardens. Hope you are going to stay put for awhile Moving for sure is not just simple. There is a grower of Brugmansia in Quebec that my youngest daughter ordered plants from, but is to late I expect for this year You might even be able to simply drive to the Brugmansia grower in Quebec. Will look up the name of it if you are interested All the best

Not to worry Mari. As others have said tilling is not necessarily needed. My tiller was never effective in this rocky, hard clay and usually just bounced all over creation so I stopped trying. I've been doing exactly what you did for the last two years with great results. I'm slowly reclaiming what I thought were impossible areas just by putting down a couple of layers of cardboard right overtop of thriving weeds and making sure it overlaps properly to prevent sunlight from penetrating. Then I cover that with a thick layer of mulch/dirt, etc... (heck, sometimes I don't even mulch if it's an area that isn't easily visible and won't be an eyesore. If there are already established plants in the area I just cardboard around them and pull whatever weeds may reach out around their bases. Otherwise I just wait until the weeds are dead before planting new things. Even if a few stray weeds or runners find a way through it's much easier to eliminate those few once all the rest are dead. I had an area that was completely taken over by wild blackberry vines taller than me. They spread 15 feet closer to the house in just one season! So I whacked everything to the ground and then blanketed with the cardboard in the summer and everything underneath is dead now(yay!) I have yet to find a chemical brush or weed killer that actually does what it's supposed to and kill the root of the annoying weed grasses, thorny vines, etc... This takes a little longer but will not waste your money or time like spraying. I also just borrowed a large rubber liner from a relative and I'm going to use that to try and retake my gravel driveway and parking area one section at a time. I have heard this "solarization" is not always recommended for areas where you intend to plant though because the heat will also kill the beneficial microbes & organisms that are in that soil. Weeds in gravel are an awful pain. I look forward to a day when we can afford to blacktop it. Sincerely, Danielle

Will check Lowe's when i get a chance altho ours don't carry Optimaras. Home Depot has had NO AVs for quite awhile, but I will go check again. Maybe a florist or a nursery...and when I get them going again I now have cats so will have to enclose them somehow....maybe one of my old aquariums....hmnn...shall have to think about this, lol.

Hi I have ordered from Jo's. IMO, these are more for the "specialist." For plants that arrive in the right size pot and potting medium that are often in bloom, well grown, even for a starter plant, I recommend Lyndon Lyon. Their own hybrids are usually easy to grow. Be sure to "read the fine print" as some get too large. Better to start with four than ten. If you send me an email, I can send you small starters that are duplicates of leaves that produced a lot. However, often African Violets and cats are not a good combination, as you probably have been reading on other threads. Joanne

Thanks for your help. Found a couple of noids (very pretty) at a local nursery. It's been so long since I had AVs that i had to think what those letters stood for. Got some perlite to go into my mix and got them repotted up on wicks and under lights. Yeah, I'm having fun. Of course I'll have to put down some leaves...do I still have solo cups???. I remember there was a website with descriptions and pics of many AVs...not the Optimara site...can anybody help me with that? Boy have I ever forgotten a lot...might have something to do with my age...lol..

lotsaplants, I found some nice violets at Walmart recently for around $3.50. lots of different colors, and in good shape.

lotsaplants: I am in Arizona also. Cottonwood has home depot, Basha's, Walmart. Once in a while there will be an African violet or two but not often. I managed to find a total of 6 mostly out of bloom, bedraggled, three years ago . Now I am down to two and HD/WM don't have any so I am buying online. When HD/WM get them in, it will be as usual, one variety in two colors, one pink, one blue.So many more choices online.
