Pee Gee Hydrangea Tree

I think I am in zone 5 (I'm in Kansas) and I purchased a 4 ft pee gee hydrangea tree. It is in direct Sun, which I have looked up and found that this variety loves full Sun. It was just planted today and my question is, how much water do I give it right now since it is newly planted? Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

We cannot tell you how much water your tree/shrub needs in your situation, without being there. It depends on how well your soil drains, how moist your soil is, how much it rains, what the weather's like, and countless other factors.

You can tell how much water your tree/shrub needs fairly easily. At planting, you should thoroughly wet the soil (surrounding and in the rootball), down to at least the level of the bottom of the rootball. Then, read section 12 in the link below.

Wow, I do not have all of these answers. The tree was planted on the corner of my house,in direct Sun. Every other plant is flourishing in that area without me putting anything on them and they, getting only water from the irrigation system. The weather here is Kansas right now is hot and about 77. But, I would like to thank you for giving me some info on the watering.

We definitely plan to keep everything trimmed rather than billowy and do plan to mulch the entire area.Just trying to figure out what ground cover and perennials to add before it gets mulched. We have 3 ft for the roses to grow up to the windows and like you said wouldn't be bad if they came up past the window a little. I will recheck the depth from the wall, we may have them too close. You are right about the Nandinas. I couldn't remember which one I wanted Firepower or Harbor Dwarf and it was the latter so will change them out. I saw them today with rose shrubs and laurels and they looked great. I actually was interested in a loose shrub by the door behind the boxwoods but couldn't think of something that would look appropriate. Wasn't sure if the camelia could work there or a viburnum? Any suggestions? Thanks.Glad you caught the Nandina mistake.

Hi Jess - We have a Kyushu tree-form that was attempting to revert to their original bush nature (sprouted little growths on trunk). I was instructed to shave them off to redirect the energies back up. I thought that PGs are sluggish in breaking dormancy in our zone - warm sunny days will help shake it up from sluggishness ... paniculatas need a fair amount of sun. This was a long cold Winter past, wait a while more & see - mean time, find your (warranty) receipts. Good luck!

Do you mean leaf buds or flower buds? It's much too early for this plant to be producing flowers but it should be starting to leaf out nicely. All sorts of variables will influence exactly when this happens, climate and current temperatures being the primary factor, but if the buds are present and green, it should happen soon as George said :-) And you can cut off the old the flowers if you wish. Many gardeners treat this activity as a routine grooming process on various hydrangeas each season. Often they won't fall off on their own and will looky messy if not removed.

It does not sound like a good idea to me to plant anything under such conditions. There are some trees that can survive under those types of conditions, even in the sea, but I have never heard of hydrangeas being one of them. The roots need to supply oxygen and when this flooding happens, the water prevents air from reaching the roots. It is ok for this to happen for a few hours when the plant is being watered -say- but, for several weeks? Sounds a harsh environment. Has anything else grown in there before?
