Pat, will you go to the thread on a climber for a semi shady spot right below and add whether you think field of woods would work for his situation? I know how much you love that rose. He's in the DC area and wants something no spray.

He wants advice about a red climber to go up a pine tree.

I can't help at all with your question, except if you're an ignorant rosarian, there's no hope for me... :) I think Country Dancer is the one that Ronda loves.

You should get "Quietness" so I can be jealous of you. We cannot get that rose in Canada. Period. I checked everywhere. Nobody even special orders either.

If you need a climber, you cannot go wrong with Prairie Princess. Tough rose.

These were taken last year. That support is not strong enough for her this year. Her canes are large, long and flexible. I love this rose. She is susceptible to midge, but then most roses are.

Hey Pat, I don't have it but I know you were looking for whites/whitish roses recently and Rural Rhythm is a pretty blush/pale pink rose with frilly looking petals. I would love to have it but there is the issue of all those pots that are already sitting here having to be watered...

Pat, the granite counter tops and new sink are in but the painting still has to be done. I will take a photo when it is all finished and send it to you. The turn around time on the counter tops was pretty quick, I agree. Still chaotic but only for a week, thank goodness we weren't tearing down walls or pulling out cabinets. I would have needed pills, a lot of pills :-).

Iowa State U recently did trials to determine best Bucks; Prairie Squire came out very well; also Country Dancer, Earth Song, Carefree Beauty.

If you don't mind, I will chime in even though our growing zones are very different.

I grow only two from the ones that you've listed and they are Malaguena and Prairie Star.

My Malaguena is a 4 year old own root. It has grown to be about 2ft tall and wide. It has been mostly disease free for me, getting a few blackspots late in the summer which it soon recovers from on it's own. Other than my knockout roses, this is one of the best bloomers in my garden. The flowers are a medium pink with a light sweet scent them. I liked this rose so much that I ordered a second one this past spring. This rose is a keeper for me.

Prairie Star has not been a good rose for me. I have two of them.They are both still very small less than 18" tall and 15" wide. I have had them 3 years and they have been so slow to establish. The flowers are pretty but are not very numerous. They take a good long break between flushes. They have a light fragnance that I'm not fond of similar to myrrh. It is a blackspot magnet. It's one of the first bushes in my garden to get it and will defoliate quickly from it. Once the blackspot starts, I spend half my summer trying to get this plant healthy again. I spray about or 3 or 4 times during the growing season and most of my roses do well with that but not this rose. I'm giving this rose one more season to improve and if it doesn't then I'll be replacing it next spring with something else.

You mentioned that Distant Drums doesn't like your garden, I have three of them and mine give me very little trouble at all except for their lack of winter hardiness. They always start the new season out by being trim down to the ground. They recover quickly though and are a nice addition. They are such a unique rose, sorry that you can't grow them.

Is there a reason you did not include Earth Song on your list? ES is a star here and it appears from past posts that many are growing it successfully all over the country.

I have decided to not spray, and I will more than likely lose Distant Drums. Prairie Star was a challeng even when I sprayed regularly. I have 5 or 6 of them. They are over 5 feet tall, but are black spot magnets.

I have about 20 Buck roses, and my best are: Golden Unicorn, Earth Song, Quietness. Others only second year ones that seem good are Prairie Breeze, Prairie Haervest, Pearlie Mae. Country Dancer and Simon Estes are only this year and seem ok, but I haven't challenged the black spot yet. Simon Estes comes from Country Dancer, and they look alike.

Honey Sweet is beautiful, but needs to be sprayed. Prairie Sunset is so pretty, but seems a little delicate. I bought a couple last year and this year. Square Dancer and Splendora are new to me this year. Serendipity seems a little vulnerable to black spot. So does Cadenza.

Gentle Persuasion seems to be a good rose.

I don't know if it will be much help, but check out the site below. The HRS has been a champion of Buck Roses and have done testing of which buck roses grow the best in their state. Since the climate there is so close to MS where I live, our rs promotes these roses as good buck roses for for people to purchase that know nothing about Bucks.

cherriej I have the exact same scenario with Prairie Star. EXACTLY! I got mine from Heirloom.

I finally dug it up this spring and put it in a pot. It's got one bud and looks a little healthier than it did in the ground.

I'll let you know how it does.

Pat you're in such a different zone to us that it may be totally different for you.

I'm in Mississippi and grow Prairie Star no spray. It's not 100% BS free, but the BS is not so bad I'm going to get rid of it (like I'm thinking about doing with Distant Drums and Blue Skies). And the flowers on Prairie Star are beautiful.

The ones I love best aren't on sale, o well! Folksinger, Prairie Harvest, Distant Drums, and Quietness. I've seen Griff's Red in a display garden & decided I'd rather have Polonaise. Fell all over Honeysweet but nixed it b/c of it needing spray. DD does very well for me no-spray, but my garden is small so I have time to maintain surveillance and pick off yucky leaves. I also remove lower foliage and thin the center. It's worth it. The new display garden is billed as an organic garden and it's at the zoo of all places! (That's Virginia Zoo, in Norfolk, VA).

Pat, I'm not saying that PS should be your choice. I mainly picked it on fragrance merit. It is two years old and growing very slowly so it may not work out.

The deed is done. I ordered the four aforementioned in my previous post. I already have 3 Quietness, Golden Unicorn, Distant Drums, Griff's Red, Casa Blanca, and some prairies and winters and autumns. LOL. Their names are so similar I forget which ones I have but I think I am moving more toward Buck roses and if these prove to be a mistake then I might go with planting nut grass. It does very well here. :)

I have copied and saved this thread for future references because all your opinions count for me and I will grow these roses and order more through the years and look to this as sage advice.

Triple B - I've been wanting to get Quietness for awhile now. It can't be found in Canada? Boo hoo! I'm going to ask the local greenhouse if they will place an order for me for next year. They've helped me like this before - so who knows.

Barbara - That Prairie Princess is SPECTACULAR!! I'll be looking for that one!!

I have had good luck with Griff's Red, Quietness and Earthsong from Roses Unlimited.

I bought a bunch of Bucks from Sam Kedem one year and most of them died. These included Chorale, Music Maker and Rural Rhythm. Prairie Sunrise just up and died on me.

Prairie Breeze and Prairie Star will be arriving next week from the RU sale.
