Sugar Maple saplings

I have a number of sugar maple saplings on my property. This spring, as the buds open and the leaves expand, I'm noticing two distinct types of young leaves. Some of the trees have leaf buds that rapidly expand, with leaves that quickly become big and light green. While others trees have leaf buds that expand much more slowly. The new leaves on those trees are very crinkled, much darker green (maybe even with a reddish cast), and slow to expand (they are barely starting, while other sugar maples nearby have big green leaves!) I know for a fact that they are all definitely sugar maples. I find the difference very curious and fascinating. I wonder if it is indicative of what color the fall foliage will turn (orange, or red?). Has anyone noticed this phenomenon, and have any commentary or insights? Thanks!
