Soy milk?

I'm 99.5% sure the answer is YES, but... can I moisten my compost with expired flavored soy milk (Silk)? I assume it would be a nitrogen?

Yes.

In fact, in my opinion, that's the only appropriate use for it :-).

A friend of mine, MartyH, once made me try chocolate soy milk on cereal. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, in fact it was quite good.

Though I doubt I could consume it without the cereal.

Is there such a thing as soy ice cream?

Silk soy is the best!! i am addicted to it... i actually have it in place of a snack most of the time. and every morning for breakfast I also buy the Vanilla and the Plain. I actually have been telling my friends about it... and i dont usually get excited over such a small thing, but the Carbs are relatively low, and the protein is higher than regular milk and the non-lactose milks.... I use Silk soy with everything that calls for milk.

Do they sell Lactaid or other lactase-treated milk where you live? It's a lifesaver. If you drink some of that milk, then you can have other dairy that would normally bother you. In your recipe, if you used a lactase-treated milk and real cream, which is naturally low in lactose, then you should be okay. But some people are more intolerant than others and your mileage may vary. You can also buy the lactaid pills.

SOY MILK (FROM SOY BEANS) SOY MILK AND BASE SOY MILK (FROM SOY BEANS) 1 cup soybeans 3 cups water 5 to 6 cups warm water pinch of salt 1 Tbsp. honey Soak 1 cup soybeans in 3 cups water for 24 to 48 hours. Pour off water in which beans have been soaked. Grind beans until fine. Add 5 to 6 cups warm water and boil for 30 minutes. Strain add pinch of salt and 1 Tbsp. honey. This milk can be used exactly the same as cows milk. . Don't use soybeans that are used as seed, as they have been sprayed. Use the ones that are harvested out of the field. or, another approach; SOY MILK AND BASE 2 cup water 1 cup soy flour 1 tsp. sea salt (or regular) Blend or stir until smooth. (After cooking, base should be custard like.) Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes (stir after 20). Or crock pot on low for 3-4 hours stirring. May be frozen. MILK: 1/2 cup soy base 1/2 cup water (plus 4 c.) 1 tsp. vanilla 2 Tbsp. sweetener 1/4 tsp. sea salt (or regular) 1/3 cup cashews Blend all but 4 cups of water until smooth. Add water. Chill and shake before serving.

Joe, I love Vanilla Silk on my cereal. I eat the combination frequently for dessert if that tells you anything...

And yes, there is such a thing as soy ice cream. I haven't had it for years, so I won't vouch for quality. You should be able to find it with the health foods / vegetarian / organic foods. Depending on your store that may be a dedicated part of the frozen foods section or a small freezer in the health/vege/organic foods section.

Keeping in mind that somewhere around 90 percent of all soybeans (the source of soy milk) grown today are at least genetically engineered to be pesticide resistant whether you want to add this to your compost, and eventually your soil is something only you can determine. If you are lucky enough to be able to find some that is not a GMO product then it could be added to the compost, no question.

Kimmsr, re-read your post. That doesn't make much sense to make a plant pestcide resistant. Does that mean a bug can eat the plant and then it will also be pesticide resistant? I think what you ment is that the plant is engineered to be pest resistant not pesticide resistant.

Soybeans are like corn there are many different varieties. Some are GMO and some aren't. It's hard to say if what they attually use in it is GMO or more on the natrual side of things.

According to the Silk website it is made with non-GMO soy beans. But it doesn't say anything about being organic. So they still may use pesticides or fertilizers that are not organic. But that's going to be the same for 99.9% of the food out there at this time.

Technically, pesticide is something that will kill pests. The term is sometimes used to mean herbicides and insecticides, since weeds and insects can both be considered pests. So pesticide resistant could mean herbicide resistant.

GMO crops generally are made to be Round-up resistant, so the farmer can spray Round-up and kill weeds, but not kill the crop. So Kimmsr's post about the pesticide resistance is correct.

However, I am skeptical that adding a GMO product to the compost pile would have any effect on the subsequent compost. We're not eating the compost after all...

Round-up is a herbicide not pesticide. You are correct about being Round-up ready basicly means the plant can with stand using Round-up that is sprayed to kill any other plants in the field. It has nothing to do with pests. For no reason that I could think of there would be a plant that would be pesticide resistant.

I've seen many farmers use this round up ready crops. But one of the funny things is that one year they will use round up ready corn then the next they use the beans. Well when they spary they can't get rid of the corn growing in the bean because it's also round up ready. So now they have bean fields with corn in them that they can't kill. It's kind of funny.

An herbicide is a pesticide.

And even if only bug-killing things were pesticides: there are also GMO Bt corn, which kills corn borers, and GMO Bt potatoes, which kill Colorado potato beetles.

Also, it's true, according to the Silk site, that not all Silk soy milk is organic. But the packages they use in the pictures are. And they say, "Most Silk products are made with certified organic soybeans." (Although "most" could, of course, mean "one more container than half".)

Herbicides and Insecticides are both pesticides.

Whether you think a GMO product put into your compost pile is good, bad, or indifferent makes no one whit of difference, If you buy products that contain GMO products you support that industry and encourage the growers to grow more of them. Refusing to buy those products, if it were possible, or getting our elected representatives to require labeling of these products so we can make that choice, is the only way to stop this contamination of our food.
