can you spot the OGR in this picture?

Actually, there are several, but the one I am talking about is a baby Le Vesuve in the middle foreground. The photo foreshortens everything - it is really not being smushed by the valerian and hollyhocks - not yet, at least.

I let everything else grow this Spring to give my little side garden some privacy from the street and the driveway. When the Le Vesuve gets bigger I will dig out the other plants, as the Le Vesuve will get to be at least 8 ft by 8 ft by 8 ft, and will take up all of the space in the front of this picture, and will become the privacy wall on this side of that garden. (The large pot on the stump will stay.) Meanwhile, I am enjoying the other flowers!

I was completely sidetracked by the lush greenery and beautiful flowers. As beautiful as Le Vesuve is, it's difficult to imagine anything more desirable than this.

I got the most noticeable results one time mixing some organic fertilizer into the existing soil at planting time, and nothing else. That's assuming the strong growth had anything to do with the fertilizer. Since all the plants were given the same treatment, there was no basis for comparison. Same as when it is thought that amending of planting hole backfill produces a benefit - the plants grew so it must have helped. Actually, it doesn't. And the effect it has on how water moves into and out of the amended small planting hole can actually be detrimental. But unless the hole collects water like a sump or loses it to the surrounding soil to such an extent that the new plant is dry all the time - two outcomes that are not unknown, by any means - the plant survives to root into the unamended soil around the liberally amended planting hole at which point growth improves markedly. The plant grew great (after it got out of the amended zone) so the amendments must have been beneficial. Amending or replacing an entire bed, to out beyond the rooting area of the roses avoids the problem of water behavior within small holes, surrounded by different textured unamended soil. But there is still the problem (with amending) of the amendments decomposing and returning the soil to its original condition as the years go by. Not a problem with frequently replaced vegetables and flowering annuals, which are likely to have their bed areas re-worked frequently anyway. But who's going to lift and replant their roses every few years or so?

Not on purpose, at least in the beginning. My DH and I inherited a garden full of old roses 24 years ago when we moved into the family house his great grandfather had purchased new in 1905. Three generations of gardeners, then 25 years of being a rental and getting only minimal care, had left the garden with many surviving roses which luckily LOVE our climate, and most of them were OGRs. I grew up in a Victorian house in a nearby town, and always loved & collected antiques, so I was thrilled to move into this one (which we purchased from family members quite promptly). My antiques fit right in. Then I slowly noticed the roses, roses, everywhere. I have been hooked ever since - adding new old ones. The only modern ones we have are some HTs from the 1940s thru the 1960s which were here, and which I regard as "family heirlooms". They live in large pots next to the patio where I can keep an eye on them, and discourage some of their bad habits. Oh, we did also put in some modern ground cover roses way out by the street 20 years ago - they are still going strong too. We are blessed, of course, with a climate roses love, and that makes everything much easier. Can we diagnose your spots? SURE!!! Let's see. You're either a leopard, a jaguar, a young deer, or we all have eye problems. :>) I think you've got it right. Weather related. Intensity of the green color will vary somewhat with the amount of direct sunlight the plants receive. Plants will tend to want to shut down some areas if the flow of nutrients and energy are not adequate. A foliar feed can sometimes offset this. Ted

Thank you, Carol and bluesanne. The tree that creates the largest amount of shade is a gigantic silver maple and my neighbor is very much attached to this tree. I don't want to hurt her feelings but I also don't think it would be possible to remove much of the shade without basically cutting off most of this tree. I kinda like it too though there are tons of helicopter seeds to clean up in spring. You got it right, bluesanne. I'm doubting myself in advance! :-) We planted CdM last week and, after a day or two of adjustment, he looks fine now but I worry if he would not have enough sun to get properly established: he gets sun at about 8:30-10 am and then again for slightly over an hour in the late afternoon, ca. 5-6 pm. For the rest of the day, sometimes it's dappled shade and sometimes deep shade, depending on the density of maple leaves. Carol, I am very encouraged now after seeing how much/little light some of your old roses get! And they all look gorgeous as seen on your recent threads. I'm curious,-- do you prune your albas, gallicas and other OGRs in early spring or right after their blooming? My guess is that, for part-shade conditions under deciduous trees, it would be better to prune them before they leaf out because that's when they get most sun for developing their new buds... I'm somewhat confused that OGRs flower on "old wood" and yet I read that some prune them in winter/early spring.

Thanks, Ingrid. We are having a cooler than normal Spring - it even rained yesterday! It has been foggy for about half of each day before the sun comes out - temps get into the 70s at most. As a consequence, the garden is loving it - not dried out yet - everything is green & lovely. I thought I would take some pics before our normal hot & dry Summer puts a lot of the plants to sleep.

I cheated. I dragged your rose pic over to Photoshop and used the magnifying lens. (My eyesight is not the best.) But I spotted Le Vesuve! It's going to be spectacular when it matures. Great setting!

I love the lush flower cover companions for your in-the-meantime enjoyment. Yours is a trick that I used with impatient design clients who wanted something to look at besides their gallon-sized shrubs and the neighbor's ratty old hammock.

How do you keep your hollyhocks so healthy? Mine often rust like old skillets.

Carol - these hollyhocks are mostly seedlings from fig leaf types I got from Annie's Annuals in years past. They did get some rust, but only on leaves very low to the ground.

Carol----I paint watercolors and have posted a few over the years---When I had my hip replacement I had a stress fracture in the Femur and had to be in a wheelchair for three months----this happened with both hips and made it difficult to sit at my artist table and then had two back surgeries which made it even more difficult to sit---so I haven't painted for a couple of years--I do have pictures of some---I will try to post a few----it is way past my bedtime---I'm off to bed but will post as soon as I can----------Many of my paintings are roses so I guess I can post them here

That would be really lovely but please feel no pressure at all. I'll enjoy them if or when you can post them. I am so sorry you've had to endure all those surgeries. I hope everything is healing well. I wish I could pop over to help you with weeding and other chores, but I think you live in PA and I live in OR. I'm sending telepathic messages for the weeds to pack up and the roses to prune themselves. Another thought: many of my weeds have become prized flowering companion plants and my roses that haven't been pruned in ages make for a magical secret garden effect! Carol
