Best OGR for shade
Comments (25)I've grown over a dozen rose cultivars in shade and reccomend evaluating exactly how many hours of sun that is available before choosing a rose cultivar. I only count the hours of dappled sun that are strong enough to cast a shadow from my hand,( a suggestion I got from a rose book, and would accredit it if I could remember its' name) and add to that the hours of full sun that the intended planting spot receives. This effort saves time, and money and prevents dissapointment. In my own shady backyard, I've planted Albas, Noisettes, and Hybrid Musks and from my successes and failures, suggest these: - In 4 hours full sun and 4 hours rose quality dappled shade (where my hand casts a shadow) these roses have thrived, Alba Semi-Plena, and "Bubble Bath" bloom well. In 6 hours full sun and 2 hours rose quality dappled shade these Noisettes and H.M.s bloom well: "Catos' Cluster" and "La Nymph" Hybrid Musks "Cornelia" and the beautiful yellow H.Musk "Callisto". in 6.5 hours to 7 hours full sun and 1-to 1.5 hours rose quality dappled shade: "Buff Beauty", "Prosperity" and the Tea- Noisette "Crepescule" bloom well. I hope this information is of help, Luxrosa P.S. -If the plant you purchase, is less than 4 ft. tall and it is intended for an area with dappled shade, I suggest planting the rose in a pot, and keep it potted until it reaches 4 ft tall on its own. The height of the pot will elevate the rosebush so it will get more sunlight in dappled shade. Hope this is of help Luxrosa...See MoreCharles de Mills in Texas?
Comments (12)I have several OGR's that I am trying (don't laugh everyone!): Charles de Mills, Cardinal de Richelieu, Hippolyte, La Belle Sultane and Rosa Mundi. I received these as bands earlier this year and plant-wise, they are all going gangbusters, having gotten quite large. Some of them produced a few blooms, which as I have said several times previously, may be all the blooms I ever get - ha! I'll have to just wait and see what happens through the long, hot summer...maybe we'll have a colder winter this year and they will bloom. Or not! Lynn...See MoreIs Charles de Gaulle worth 13 USD?
Comments (5)Joe, I meant to say that’s the coldest it could get, as a matter of fact, it’s been a some time since we last got near to 0°C (32°F), I guess it didn't go through like that. It’s OK to “hijack” hehe, that calls for correction, so that my message is received the way I intended. ; ,) And I own some unidentified lavender, a complete mess of a dog, it has that pink-bleaching problem in full sun; Still pretty, and fragrant, I'd just wish it wasn't so disease ridden, it's a bit repulsive to look at it sometimes: aphids, the honeydew that comes with them, mildew, canker, it only needs BS to have it all! Despite all my efforts, I think it is not suited for an organic garden, which is my intention, but I'll keep it for some more time, just to see if it matures somehow better. Also what I think might be Midnight blue, which shows it’s dark purple only in full sun, whereas it is hot pink in shade. (The bloom that looks like it's from an entirely different plant, opened inside.) I have seen many lavenders on HMF varying much with the weather and light conditions, it can either get more pink or more purple in the sun, as far as I know, depending on the variety. That’s why I asked. Thanks, and yeah, you should go check if they have them there too if you liked it, the price seems novel. Meredith, so it opens pink-ish and turns a truer lilac with sunlight? That sounds convenient all right! I would have to find a spot with a bit of shade like you describe, I think. I have had one young bush bake to death before, I wouldn't risk it with this one. I am most likely getting it, I just need to know, would it thrive in a pot? How large? For how long? I don’t have any lawn at the moment, Everything I grow, I grow in containers. I've read it is a short bush, reaching a bit more than a meter in height, with similar width... Thank you both so much!...See MoreMay 2020 The OGR’s the Modern Roses and a bit of everything else.
Comments (121)Lisa, you have so many truly gorgeous pictures of your roses, but somehow the photo I wanted to see the most, of you and your daughter (and her precious baby bump) is missing. I'd love it if you could please post it again. The purple clematis and penstemon with the pink roses is wonderful. All your clematis plants are gorgeous. They add a lot to the roses, a perfect contrast. The flowers for the baby shower are also lovely, and I'm so glad you were able to have the shower. Even if done somewhat differently it's the love that counts, always....See Morevesfl (zone 5b/6a, Western NY)
