Welcome and enjoy, ohh and get some family help cooking and cleaning around the house as your won't have much time for that kind of stuff anymore.

My husband is very good about helping out around the house, grocery shopping, etc. It's that pesky job that becomes a problem. Anybody want to offer to go to the hospital and put patients to sleep for me?

Yup, drilled holes in the buckets for drainage. Found some other containers to use now too.

Now, if the darn potting mix I brought in from the greenhouse would just thaw out...LOL

welcome!! winter sowing is very very addicting. i've posted many times before that it cured my winter depression. gone!! i started 4 yrs ago and i can't stop. i've got about 80 containers done and have about 15 sitting by and on the table just waiting for some good ole soil and seeds. my goal this yr is 300 of things i've never sowed before!! good luck, have fun and welcome to the family!!

Dirtbirt, good, you have to have drainage, and make sure you label stuff good. It's easy to get things mixed up. Tanya, 4 years, 80 containers & 300 things you've never sowed before! WOW. I am impressed! I only have 1 year down, 45 containers this year, and am thinking "where am I going to put all these plants?"! But I also want to try a bunch of new things! Dirtbirt, I hope your not an obsessive compulsive person, because wintersowing is both!

Well I am definitely obsessive compulsive when it comes to gardening...LOL
At least with WSing I can start lots of seeds and not have every flat surface of my house covered with seedlings...LOL
I can save those flat surfaces for the tender annuals and veggies. :)

geez tanya!! LOL :')) we've got over 100 cups filled and we have about 30 maybe containers done and got 4 more done tonight. hubby bought me some more dirt. and i'm getting more containers from neighbors and we keep filling em up!! it keeps my mind off the little stuff!! LOL then i don't know what i'll do when it come's time to put all this stuff somewhere!! LOL thank goodness we have the property to put it somewhere. LOL :')) and welcome!! its so fun!!

my problem now is I am out of containers ( i need to go pick some up from a friend) and i have sown all but a few of the perennials and other things that can be sown now, that i have, i can't seem to find anthing new that i dont' have on the seed exchange. I have lots of annuals and veggies to do. but the veggies wont count as it's stuff i've always done. i will try some popcorns and gourds i've never done. i've been going thru the seed catalogs but can't afford all the stuff i want. oh, well i'll find something. Dirtbert, you started reading this morning and you're obsessed already?? That was fast, I've been gardening 20 years, and learned about winter sowing last year...but didn't actually get started till this year. Hehe, a little slow getting started but it's so exciting to be growing LOTS more plants from seed. Winter-sowing makes a lot of sense, but I haven't actually seen any sprouts yet. If lots of these seeds actually germinate, I'll be a goner....

Terrene, got bad news for you, you're a gonner. Those seeds are going to germinate and you sure don't want them to start now.

You will start to see your sprouts,probably in the beginning of April. that's assuming they aren't under a couple of feet of snow.

First you will see only one or 2 containers with sprouts, then a few more at a time, and then, oops, they are germinating, in the morning, in the afternoon and in the evening every day.

If you have any doubts about those seeds turning into seedlings and plants, just remember my plant swaps and all those containers in the back yard, all the seedlings potted up to give away.
Everyone of them where from wintersowing.

And guess what? All those containers are piling up out back again. So just bring along all your extra "off spring" to the swap this year.

Fran, it'll be exciting to see the first seedling! I remember all the winter sown seedlings you gave away at the plant swaps. The Cosmos, Alyssum, and California Poppies have grown great, and I hope they reseed this year.
