Can I save my Kousa Dogwood?

After our neighbor pushed over our kousa dogwood sapling in February, I straightened and staked it. It started to bud in early April, then we had two hard frosts and it stopped. It continued to be totally bare except for a miniscule sprig at the base (which I had to cover with soil for the tree to even stand), but supple, so last week I transplanted it out of our neighbor's reach and discovered that he had broken the root ball completely off. It survived with just a splintered fork below the trunk, but I don't know how to help it. I used the Miracle Gro transplanting liquid and am keeping it watered. Should I prune to stimulate growth or just give up? I adore that tree and can't afford to by another one.
