Home Depot's Tomato Plants
Comments (38)I've bought decent transplants in Home Depot and Lowe's, with a few caveats ... I'd say the burden is definitely on the grower to know appropriate planting times. I live in zone 10a, with a winter growing season, but the big box stores stock tomatoes all year. Anyone who plants a tomato in April where I live is begging for a disaster. And the staff is no help. It's also up to us to pick the good plants. It's hit or miss as far as health is concerned. Sometimes the plants are in great shape, and sometimes they're old, already in heavy bloom and setting fruit, and underwatered. You know, buyer beware. But still ... I'm usually happy to see racks of tomato plants in big box stores. That's how most people get startedthey're walking through the store, see a tomato plant and think, "Hey, I'd like to try that." And thus begins the journey of a thousand varieties. Here is a link that might be useful: Growing Tomatoes in South Florida...See MoreHome Depot instead of registry?
Comments (9)havnablast - -when I reread my post, it sounded to me like I was saying YOU were trying to ask for gift cards -- I do realize this is your friend's idea, not yours. But there's a good solution for your friend: At least on line, Home Depot has a gift registry anyway. So she and her fiance can just go ahead and register for some things there, if they want. It's the same as gift cards, anyway, as they can exchange things, right? But anyway, she should not include any information about the registry or gift preferences in the invitations. If you don't want to argue about it with her about it, just direct her to this site and let her see what people have had to say about sending out unsolicited registry info! There are several strings on the subject....See MoreWalmart Violets--heavy sigh

Comments (23)Ordering might be your best shot. If you've got a few extra dollars, ... take a look at Optimara outlet www.SelectiveGardener.com. There are some great plants being offered, they can send you plants in bloom, and the packing is superb. My only caveat is that I'd wait another month or so before ordering ... P.S. They've got a new series LooXo, which features no anthers/pollen sacs. Beyond having a somewhat different look, ... these plants might turn out to be more Thrip resistant ......See Morequimoi
