Hmmm...I can't spell...it's Queen of the PRAIRIES. Well, it was on the wish list for about an hour. I ordered it from Vintage@ I didn't want to wait another season, only to maybe find out it wasn't available.

It's listed as rambler, which I tend to shy away from because of space restriction, but this rose I saw growing was mannerly. Although it may eat my house in zone 6a.

I love the cool pink tones and the form of the rose. It certainly doesn't look like a rambler of the usual style. I wonder if it repeats. It would seem to be a beautiful acquisition for those of you who garden in cold climates.

Has anyone succeeded in getting R. setigera genes into a repeat-blooming rose? Not that I know of. Too bad, because it's about the toughest rose there is-- zone 3 hardiness and apparently ironclad resistance to blackspot.

We had it but got rid of it a couple of years ago. The suspicion was that it was virused. It definitely lacked the expected vigor. We have a split rail fence with R. setigera at one end, and a bunch of setigera hybrids in between. The one at the Garden of Legend and Romance looks like ours did - the species next to it ate it alive and came back looking for more.

It isn't an easy rose to find, and the question is whether or not there are any good clones in commerce. I'd be very interested in how the one from Vintage does.

Thanks, Eric, for getting an ID on that rose. I noticed it, too. Last June, the fence in that garden was covered in blooming New Dawn, White Dawn and Veilchenblau, all of which were badly damaged last winter. The roses that look good this year are the true toughies, hardy to the minus-20 (F) temps that they experienced. It will be interesting to hear if it's significantly bigger in Cincy.

Those arches in the background of your first photo used to be absolutely covered in towering Penzance eglantine hybrids. They really had suffered from last winter's freeze, too. I hope that Ohio has a couple of mild winters so that all of the freeze-damaged roses can come roaring back.

If you can convince them to get rid of the spiny rose galls that are in their R. eglanteria and related hybrids, the roses should be stronger. (This from watching mine that I didn't get the spiny things off of for a year....I wanted to see what they'd do...)

I have a baby QoP that I got from the rose day at Lynchburg VA. It was used to show how roots can emerge fast in a mixture of kitty litter and perlite and it had been pulled out of the 'soil' about eight times. It took me a while to convince it that it was worth living, but It should be ready to go in the ground in late fall (with a protective cage above AND below ground.)

I can't think of any that repeat, but a search for setigera hybrids should include 1800's literature that referred to it as the Prairie Rose as well as Michigan Rose. And somewhere in the state of Michigan, they (intentionally vague) found a Double Michigan.

There is a setigera blooming on our way into Blaine and it's held its blooms for several weeks and is a deeper pink than my other ones. I expect to find a sucker or a rooted tip in the next week or so.

Harumph! I had to cancel my order :( I forgot to ask DW before I ordered and that money is already spoken for....d'oh! It's still definitely on my list though. I think when I get one, it'll replace my Rambling Red.

Ann, if you've found a setigera that blooms for several weeks with enhanced color, that would be wonderful. Maybe someone would put it into commerce.

The only repeat blooming setigera cross I know is Chuckles. (Jean Lafitte x New Dawn) x Orange Triumph. (Shepherd)

Jean Lafitte is of course one of Horvath's 'pirate' setigeras. R. setigera seedling x Willowmere.

So if I've counter correctly, Chuckles is a great great grandchild of R. setigera, and possibly the first rebloomer in the line.

Is 'Jean Lafitte' remontant?

it might possibly have inherited remontancy from the H.T.. parent.
I looked at 'Jean Lafitte' on helpmefind,
but it didn't say whether it was remontant, or not.

The photos show a lavish rose blossom of icy white and pink, with lots of petals. Although the blooms appears a little overbred for my tastes, all rose species hybrids interest me.
J.F. was listed on hmf as a Large Flowered Climber. Must a rose be remontant to be included in the L.F.C. class?

Luxrosa, generally, I think you need a second cross with a repeater to get a repeater. That's the case with 'Chuckles.' Several of the Horvath hybrid setigeras are 1/2 Pernetiana. One used 'Austrian Copper.'

I don't think remontancy is required for LFC-- for example, 'Cl. American Beauty.'

My favorite new "olde book" is Mary Rion's Ladies' Southern Florist, which is a reprint of her original 1860 book. The University of South Carolina Press is responsible for sharing this small, great tome.

It's not all about roses, but there are some interesting statements in there. About Climbing Roses she wrote," The best of the climbers are The La Marque, ...., the Prairie Queen, multiflora, and the Greville Rose."
It's not a stretch to suggest that what she called the Prairie Queen was Queen of the Prairies (among the other names that Buist used for it in his slightly earlier book on roses.

MG gave me a QoP several years ago. It has not done much. A bloom or two, that's it. Still alive though.

My really favorite Setigera is Baltimore Belle. Mine has, I swear, at least 500 buds/flowers on it. Roughly 10x10'. And very fragrant. Tip hardy here. Its' only problem is the flowers turn brown. I haven't managed to dead head it yet!

Actually, 'Doubloons' is a first generation R. setigera hybrid which now boasts over 2300 descendants to its credit, over multiple generations. 'Goldilocks' by Gene Boerner is the most famous of its offspring and it is through this Floribunda that all of the 2000 plus hybrids arose. So, 'Goldilocks' is 1/4 R. setigera!

According to MR8, Doubloons is R. setigera hybrid x R. foetida bicolor. I'm not willing to guess what 'R. setigera hybrid' means exactly. However, probably not an offspring that is half setigera.

The patent application for 'Doubloons' lists the seed parent as R. setigera, not a R. setigera hybrid as Modern Roses has been reporting for decades. I'm inclined to believe the hybridizer's patent application in this case. MR is famous for generating persistent errors of this nature.

neroseman, I believe you when you say you couldn't detect any...all our noses are different. I could pick up a subtle (but good) fragrance.
