Got it home, but I need help with the mower deck. Is it correct for the deck to be basically held in place by one "center " shaft? The play was some muck that I took the deck off in fear that something was broken. There was +/- 6 in. of play back/forth, and to the sides of the mower deck when lowered. When raising the deck all the way, the fron right wheel was still on the ground. Something not right. Tractor seems to run o.k. Hope I can get the deck back on. I'd post pics, but I only have a dial-up connection now:(

If you mentioned what model it was would help.

Most decks just have a middle lift rod, and attach at the front.
No idea what tractor you have though......

You can stiil get dozer blades,tillers,mowing decks & baggers for most old wheel horse tractors because the design did not change that much Between the B,C & classic series Wheelhorses and Toro/wheelhose tractors until 2007 when classic series was discountinued. Prior to having a Garden tractor with a Bucket loader. I did several earth mowing projects with a GT & a Dozer Blade even use to spread Gravel with a Murray LT with a Dozer Blade as long as you take smaller bite and know your tractors limitations you can do a good leveling job. But I would say aleast step up to a Garden tractor with a dozer blade or a Johnny Bucket over your exsisting Scotts lawn tractor witha Dozer Blade Here is a link that might be useful: Johnny bucket

question to answer to yerself: why did that W/H heavy duty deck wear out so fast compared to the rest of the tractor? Was it possibly put up with wet grass caked up underneath? An answer to that might figure in on pros/cons of fix/buy new...

Hi - I only saw enough of the mower to say that it had a nicely rounded hood... no sharp edges and having taken a look at the motor - it was located up towards the front of the mower... a nice big beefy looking muffler was protruding from the right front of the tractor. from what i could see - it looked quite a bit like this unit. http://whtractor.15.forumer.com/index.php?showtopic=918 I want it ... its kinda promised to someone else... But hes basically looking for a horizontal crank motor... im hoping I can give him one of my horizontal crank motors - and try and keep this wheel horse in mostly one piece. I need mule for the yard and the Sear (god bless its soul) is not going to last forever... I guess if I could get the mower - minus motor - I could put my 5 HP Horizontal Briggs in it... (or get a little diesel - if i ever win the lottery). Thanks guys - Im gonna give him a call right now before i forget.

Thanks for all the info guys! I took the deck off again and it did look like the lift bar was bent to the left side. I should have realized this from how hard it was to get the washer and pin on the lift rod after putting the deck on. I opened up the dash to get access to the lift parts and the i-hook was bent and the trunion was bent downward with the pin just barely holding it in place. I decided to order new lift chain/i-hook and trunion. Hopefuly this will help me get the left to go higher up. Then I will try and adjust the deck again. I thought the front of the deck was supposed to be higher than the back? Also, I thought it was suspended from the ground in the front and resting on the wheels in the back? I think this is how my dads deck works anyway. Thanks again for all the help! Eyball

I was over to a old friends house tonight, as he had called me about the tires I had taken off off the Z. His 15 year old son is into pulling. He had 28 tractors sitting around there! ... most of them Horses.

I have not tried to get the deck back on yet. There was one rod in the middle, and nothing attaching the to the deck in the front. Anyone with pictures from a WH with a deck?

It should attach to the mid hitch (just below the wheels). The other attachment is simply the lift rod.

My guess is that either the mid hitch was not attached leving it hang from the lift rod, or only one side of the hitch was attched.

With the lift in the up position swing open the lift hitch and pull the hitch into it. Then swing the hitch closed. Not sure about a 1970, it either has a hole for a hair pin to keep the hitch closed (as do my 1964 and 1969) or the hitch snaps closed and locks (to release bush the button on the right side).

The beauty of these decks is that they float.

I got the deck back on after sharpening the blades. I mowed some long stuff with the deck in the raised position. Worked great! There was indeed a problem with a "hitch" at the front, it wasn't closing all the way on the right side, letting the deck droop a bit. I think it just needed some lube. Thanks for the input. I'm sure I'll have more questions. The tractor is a 1971 Wheelhorse Raider 10 6 speed. Thanks again.

Good to hear the news. Yup, on really long stuff mow it up first and then in the down position. I have mowed rough fields in the up position with my old ~1975 C120 Auto

The deck on that was a bit nicer than on the 1969 Charger 12 auto (direct ancestor to the C120). Has at better anti-scalp rollers. Still the 1969 is quite good.

The Charger has been laid up since Easter, so I have been mowing with the 1964 854. I picked it up and a 32 inch deck. This is the first rear discharge deck I have used and it works nicely. Pretty amazing for 43 year old technology. Actually the 854 is a better fit for my small lot, though the Hydro on the Charger is nice for mowing and snow plowing.
