I've created a drainage disaster!

OK, here's another newbie question. I decided to dig a small bed for perennials right next to the porch. We have hard clay soil and all around the house is gravel to about a foot deep, so I just dug about 18 inches down and tossed the mess. I loosened up the subsoil and added sand, then put some compost and topsoil in the hole. It's not filled all the way yet, but you see the problem... I basically just built a tiny pond. It takes days for the water to drain out, because, DUH, the surrounding soil is impenetrable.

We don't own this house, so I don't think want to mess with actually fixing the drainage problem on a large scale. Could I make a mini-bog garden? Are there plants that like wet feet? Or am I better off just filling the hole with the crap soil again and sticking containers on top? The area gets sun from about 11 to 5.
