Harsters Greenhouses, home of Anthoflores AVs, has their web site up! Or am I the last to know?

Regarding Optimara's Little Jewel series and whether they're actually microminis or not, I was poking around Ms. Bartholomew's 'Growing to Show', and ran across a section titled "Miniaturizing the Miniatures": 'Holtkamp introduced...Little Rose Quartz and Little Sapphire...at the 1986 AVSA convention... After I got them home, I began to suspect that these Optimara miniatures were further miniaturized through root restriction. To test my theory, I repotted Little Rose Quartz into a 2 1/2" pot...And, just as I suspected...(it)...grew considerably larger with a distinct increase in leaf size.'

Sorry for all the ... The rest of the experiment involved planting other miniatures in the thumb pots the Optimaras came in; they miniaturized even further, delighting her tremendously. :-) I believe this means that Holtkamp 'designed' these varieties specifically to grow in the thumb pots. Interestingly, when I put Rob's Twinkle Pink in a 2 oz. portion cup, it grew somewhat larger than previously; think I'll move it back to a smaller pot. Rob's Voodoo Blue wasn't at all happy in a larger pot so I moved it down yesterday.

The whole section is fascinating (well, for those of us into minis); if you don't have the book, join the AVSA and buy it, it's a good price. You know you want to join anyway.

The Dandy Pots web site seems to be missing. I just purchased two for my standards and rather like them.

For some reason, FC 2 only lists three of David Senk's varieties out of the 23 I know about (and I think there's more). Weird.

Korina - hello,

I think there was an article by Rob, somewhere in a last 3 years in AVSA magazine - where he described how he trained his plants to grow in small size pots for several generations to get them used to be smaller. (You give them space - and they turn into small standards in a couple of months, no problem).

Dandy pots - expensive geezers. I think Oyama's are better for the plants.

To register your plant - you need to fill the application and pay $5 (if I am not wrong) to AVSA. I guess David Senk never did it for most of his plants for whatever reason.

Well, I just potted up the babies I got from the NOID girl leaf I found. It's amazing in that it's round and not lobed, and the plant it came from grew in a flat rosette(!). I got *9* babies from this one leaf, and was trying to make more. Since I can't ID it, I'm calling it 'NOID Bright Girl'. Being a large-leaved standard, I'm going to have *lots* of plants to trade come spring. Assuming we have a spring.

I've seen a lot of Hoh. correia-araujoi, and the floppy leaves are just its natural growth habit. The pups start out upright like Japie's, but as they mature they eventually develop that flop, whether they're in sun or shade. They do look better in brighter light, but you're right not to want to make a sudden move into the baking sun now, Rick. On the other hand, I'm not sure that binding it up is really good for the plant either. It seems like it would choke the new growth and keep the new leaves from hardening off properly. In the end, that might actually make it worse. Best to just learn to love it as it is. ;-)

Wow! Searching for this thread this morning I found several that I'd somehow missed. Grrr. How do they get dropped to pg 2 and 3 without me seeing them? Well, here is another wonderful garden I found this morning while looking for photos of Asiatic lilies. This is a fella in Ohio named Kent, a Medical Physicist in Radiological Sciences (!), gardener, and photographer. He specilizes in Roses but has so much more, too. It goes without saying that his photos are breathtaking. Be sure to take a peek at the pages of paintings other people have done using his photos as inspiration! He also has some great info pages, he discusses growing roses with shade, and I was fascinated with the info on aphids. http://w3.goodnews.net/~kkrugh/index.html There must be several hundred pages here! Thank you my3dogs! That little Georgian chest looks interesting but not exactly what am looking for. II would like something with a bit of umph to it. That chest is definitely a great price but very close in looks to what is currently there. That French love seat is fabulous! That would look wonderful at the foot of my bed if the fabric didn't have red in it! Kswl and jlc, our CL here is beyond cringe worthy. It is truly embarrassing that our area has so little to offer. The one consignment shop that I have purchased several things from and who tout themselves as high end is a joke anymore. I always feel grungy and dirty when I leave there. I stopped by today because Sherwin Williams is the shop right next to them and I needed paint for Monday. There was not an item there that would be worth carting home at any price.
