I've never seen.......

a rooted leaf take sooooooo long in producing babies! I only had 2 leaves that a friend gave to me and I got one rooted by December 15-18...still has not produced any babies by 1st of January. Are there some that really take this long? Or, do I just have a flucke dud of a leaf here?

when did you put it down? i got a variegated leaf from an office in my neighborhood and it took a good 60 (maybe even 90) days to start babies.

(then there was the optimara leaf that went from leaf to babies to blooming in 6 months. !)

Wow, that was the fastest response I've ever seen!

Well, the leaf rooted about 7 days after I stuck it. The friend who gave me the leaves doesn't know the name of this one, and it's my first variegated type I've started.

I will be asking the same question in a minute. FJ Lindheimer was a black spot disappointment to me. Thomas Affleck is wonderful, I have quite a few and have had them for years. Julia Child was pretty, but a brightness that did not go well with my other roses. It was ok, but the next year was dead. I am not familiar with the others you mentioned. Good luck with a no spray garden. I did that many years ago, and have no regrets. Sammy

I would ask your neighbor's -nicely- if they have applied an insecticide recently. If anyone has, it is possible that the shrub is reacting to the insecticide application that the winds spilled into your home. It would be best confirmed if more than one plant had this issue, not just the hydrangea but then again, some plants can tolerate damage from insecticides better than others and not show the same symptoms. If you cannot find anyone who admits using insecticides, you could prune off the affected stems all the way down, clean/disinfect the pruners and see if the plant replaces the affected stems with good/normal looking stems/leaves in Spring 2019. If this continues then shovel prune it.

So, here's a picture of another citrus tree on the property, very similar to the bush-like one I initially asked about, but much taller. Still has floppy limbs, has thorns on it, a few blossoms, but look a the trunk. It's a bunch of limbs coming out of the ground. Not sure what to do with this or what it is. Also, here are the leaves: And going back to the bitter, dry orange... the leaves on that one look like this: Thanks again!

Speed of babies depends on the variety of violet, age of the leaf, length of the leaf stem, amount of light and humidity for the leaf and temperature. I have some that have produced in as little as 5 weeks and some that have taken 9 months.

I am no expert but I put leaf cuttings of miniature AV and chiritas in pure vermiculite. I placed the solo cups in my terrarium at 80 degrees and 65% humidity and watered them only once other than coincidental terrarium misting. They are all producing babies in 4-5 weeks. There is good lighting in the terrarium with compact flourescents.

Hi Vera -

I had the longest possible time rooting a similar leaf - girl leaf with a wild wave. It took a year from a leaf to a new plantlet. I swiped that leaf from a rotten and dying violet in a nursery because a friend of mine collects girl leaf type AVs. I do not know the name of it but I presume it is an Optimara with pale blue bloom. What is the name of your stubborn violet?

Thanks all for the responses...I'll just have to be patient on this NOID... I want this one bad enough so I'll wait as long as it takes LOL!

That's a great site!

...it's a girl with a serious ruffled edge...the leaf is not just scalloped but ruffled like the description in the gallery.... 'edge-ruffled'....

Well I have all of you beat!!! I put down two leaves of Irish Imp and 4 days later a small plantlet began forming on the edge of the leaf. The leaf was no where near the medium. I had to get out my magnifying glass to make sure what I was seeing.. and sure enough it was there.

Not only did it grow from atop of the leaf, but the mother leaf also produced babies from the stem. I was amazed at the speed. The other leaf only produced babies from the inserted stem in the medium.

The leaf was girl foliage. Miniature.

I took the leafpot to my AV Club's workshop and showed them.. they were amazed also.

Guess I could call this "Once in a blue moon!!"

Hi Guys,

Happy New Year! So finally, after I put down several leaves on 11/19, I see two sprouting babies--my first ones! One of them is also a Girl Type Ruffled Leaf and its baby is sitting right on the leaf near the base. Is that common? Will it grow a whole plant that way? I wonder...

Hi Wish,

Some types will only produce a few babies and others more...either way, when the babies are at least dime size, the babies need to be carefully seperated from the mother leaf and individually potted up into small 2" pots...each one will become it's own plant :)

My noid girl leaf is on her second round of babies. What I'm going to do with 10-15 standard plants, I have no idea (but spring is coming!). Still, it's kind of fun. The second round was actually pretty quick; I suppose because there's already roots.

that is a really cool link to the leaf site. It'll take some time to get it all straight! :) Would be cool if there would be some sort of computer program where you can put in all you AV's info, and it tells you what kind it could be. I know, I know, a NOID is a NOID and almost impossible to ID, but it would be fund anyway!
