Help! Ordered Roses I've Never Seen

I'm just NEVER the first one to order newer varieties. With under 50 roses in my current garden I want the best of the best. Just don't know what came over me this year.

Here's what's coming, hope some of these are good:

Beverly

Dark Desire

Distant Thunder

Eliza

FJ Lindheimer

Plum Perfect

Princess Alexandra of Kent

South Africa

Thomas Affleck

I am looking for a nice range of color on vigorous, healthy bushes with good repeat. A lot of different bloom forms are represented here which is all good.

After voles decimated my garden I decided to go no-spray so I dug up and gave away: Hot Cocoa, Lavaglut, Chrysler Imperial, Playboy, Night Owl, Golden Celebration, and Winter Sunset. Some of these may be resistant elsewhere but not in my relentlessly hot and humid coastal SE Virginia garden..

Thanks all you enablers who have posted your wonderful photos of some of these. Seems a lot of us have grabbed up these newer Kordes varieties, so let's compare notes this year!

I live on the lake in the Great Lake State. We know all about hot and humid here. The two healthiest roses I have are Julia Child and Home Run. Pretty much spot free all season without spray.

I have ordered many roses I've never seen also. It can be a gamble, but I can grow a love for them whatever. Super fun ahead for you Barbara.

Bellarosa - You better believe there are hummingbirds here! Technically only Ruby-throated Hummingbirds breed/migrate through Illinois, but once in a while a migrant might blow in from the west (when I lived in NYC we got all sorts of crazy things in Central Park! Now THAT'S a long way from California!). I put up my first feeder in the spring here in Evanston and had one female for a couple days ... then.. nothing. I took down the feeder until late August - and have had a female visit several times a day until yesterday - when I saw a young male as well. Hard to tell if they're the same birds or just a bunch passing though, as migration has indeed started. I planted Scarlet Runner Bean along our (gorgeous, lovely, glamourous) chain-link fence. I've seen the hummingbirds visit those blooms, and also my Honeycomb Butterfly Bush (which may not be hardy in your area)... I have plans for many more perennial/annual plantings to convince the buggers that my yard is a lush buffet. Now that they know that there's food here, maybe they'll stay NEXT year! CONGRATS!!! It is soooooooooooooooo exciting to see a new bird, and especially one as gorgeous as the Blue Grosbeak. I have lived in the South all of my life, and I have seen one of them. I was living just SW of Atlanta at the time.~Angie

Beetle. Looks similar to one of the flower longhorn beetles. (subfamily Lepturinae) http://bugguide.net/node/view/2941/bgimage?from=264 ^ not necessarily this species, but coloration and shoulders broader than abdomen are typical of this group.

I simply adore Plum Perfect!!! Thomas Affleck is especially good. Princess A. of Kent has beautiful blooms. I love Distant Thunder - Coffee Country would make a good partner for it. Beverly smells divine, I need another one. South Africa is a really bright pretty color as does FJ Lindheimer. You have picked some nice ones!

Seil-- thanks for mentioning Julia Child! She is coming too; the botanical garden has very few shrubs but their planting of Julia always looks good.

Sheila, yr right it really adds to the excitement of waiting those first blooms.

Judith, have to say I have the most suspense about F J Lindheimer. So few pics of it out there.

I will be asking the same question in a minute. FJ Lindheimer was a black spot disappointment to me. Thomas Affleck is wonderful, I have quite a few and have had them for years. Julia Child was pretty, but a brightness that did not go well with my other roses. It was ok, but the next year was dead. I am not familiar with the others you mentioned. Good luck with a no spray garden. I did that many years ago, and have no regrets.
