Anyone grow Yves Piaget?

hi all,

I saw this rose in the garden centre yesterday and it s gorgeous and smells great.

Does anyone grow it? How does it do in your garden?

According to help me find roses this is hardy to zone 7...the garden centre said zone 4 and Hortico zone 5.

Anyone grow it in zone 4?

And do you have suggestions for similar large roses that would go well with it?

Mine died after the first winter in zone 6a.

I've grown it for about 10 years, but I'm in zone 8. It's
a reliable bloomer and stays fairly healthy. The blooms are
very showy, and a pleasure to behold. I don't know how it
will do in zone 4, but it's worth a try. You might to start
it in a container, and place it in a garage when your winters are excessive. Mine has stayed outside and has endured 15 degree temps.

lol funny you ask ...it started off doing pretty well. It was growing and filling out nicely, probably about 3.5 x 2 (but probably not fully grown yet). There weren't tons of flowers but they were large, gorgeous and the fragrance was incredible. I did plant it deep. It did tend towards some bs and/or mildew but the blooms were worth it (for me at least). For most of my roses, I let them get established and then stop winter-protecting once they are "old enough" to take care of themselves. After several years, none of my roses get winter protected except the David Austin "Evelyn". Last winter, I only protected about half the amount I normally would to start weaning it off winter protection. However, in Toronto, last winter was pretty horrible in that we had periods of time of freezing cold temperatures, really cold even for us, but very little snow and snow cover. Come this Spring, Yves was dead. A lot of people lost quite a few garden plants, lots of things didn't make it, and Yves is clearly VERY borderline hardy (even Celine Forrestier makes it through my winters now with no winter protection other than fallen leaves). Live and learn I guess. I waited throughout this summer to see if it might come back but no luck. I will be buying another for next year as the blooms were wonderful and I definitely want it in my garden. I will however be winter protecting completely from now on ... just like Evelyn ... I guess some roses will just always need that here :)

I don't blame you Susan. I fell in love with peonies when still a kid after becoming aware of them at relatives' homes in Pennsylvania. Each time I've encountered them as cut florist flowers, I'm that kid again, completely consumed by those amazing, incredibly scented blooms. I've never lived where they were even remotely possible to grow, so you can imagine my delight when I first encountered Yves shortly after its American introduction in the late eighties to early nineties. I HAD to try it and I hated it. Two friends and I bought plants and all three of us were terribly disappointed with how weak and diseased they were. All of us were very experienced in rose growing by that time and none of us found him enjoyable as a plant. All three were dumped. Fast forward ten or twelve years later when I came to maintain this plant in the garden I obtained my cuttings from and I now get to enjoy the flowers several times a month. When the idea struck me to propagate several as memorial plants to this friend's mother, it was only natural I should root one for myself. Only one struck. Fortunately, I hadn't mentioned the idea to her, so I'm not on the hook to perform. Ironically, this plant is in the same climate and as the original three, yet it grew and matured into a strong, odd and angular plant, but it does flower and seldom has any fungal issues. I still wouldn't want to use it for breeding, even though I love smelling and seeing those blooms when they're just right! Kim

Cori Ann: would you mind updating us on how you tamed, and disguised the awkward growth habit of Yves Piaget? I would love to see how it’s been doing for you? Also how many blooms do you normally get in one flush, and how many flushes do you get throughout the season? I’m looking for a rose similar in color with romantic bloom form... I was seriously considering Yves Piaget but then once I saw it’s awkward growth habit I’m re-thinking my idea. I’m in Orange County, California about 6 miles from the ocean. I’ve had my eye on this rose for years, but could not figure out how I would deal with its wonky tumble weed like growth habit. The blooms on your Yves Piaget arrangement are stunning! It’s incredible you got that many blooms from one plant. When ever I’ve seen Yves Piaget, it’s only had a handful of spade blooms... if that.

I just got it for a Christmas gift this year. The bloom is a a lovely old fashioned romantic purplish rose. I am a bit disappointed because it has blackspots. I will have to treat this rose. I just thought this rose might be more resistant to the black spots as some others in my garden are.

A rose with beautiful flowers, but an extremely weak grower even in zone 7b, hence not a pretty bush and very prone to blackspot like many purple/lavender colored roses. Needs a lot of TLC, but even then might be a disappointment.

We grow Yves in Zone 5 in a raised bed.

It is a wonderful rose that is well worth trying. I do spray now and then. Never had a problem with this rose.

I have it near Ingrid Bergman, Veterans' Honor, Fair Bianca, & JP II.

Of course, I have to be vetted by the Fashion Police before I am let out in Public.

hi all,

Thanks for the replies. I may get it then! I have to replace a Tiffany that just died...and this was the closest thing the garden centre had (or so they said)..

I wish these people at the nurseries were more knowledgable about their plants though!

I grow it here in zone 6, the flowers are to die for! No disease here in this climate... I have it near Purple Heart, dark purple iris, purple asters and purple phlox, all different shades of purple that is...

It does get shade from a maroon colored crabapple and does great... Very high marks for fragrance! (It won most fragrant at last years rose show :)

I purchased mine from Roses Unlimited last spring. It died over the winter even though I protected it with a mound of topsoil. Bolero did much better.

Sounds like it really doesn t do well in the colder climates....I m still thinking about whether to get it..

The blooms are so big compared to my few other roses plus the fragrance is amazing...does anyone know of an alternative then that s more hardy? Colour doesn t matter.
